Eritrean "reversal"

Would you say that Eritrea reveresed its position or decided to bring the two parties together instead of supporting only one party? --Merhawie 13:59, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

They went from sponsoring an armed insurgency in a neighboring country to hosting peace talks and declaring that this was an example of how Africans could solve their own problems. In my mind, that's a reversal. The backstory of who got promised what must be fascinating. - BanyanTree 15:59, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

However, the Eritrean policy regarding Sudan was always equality for all Sudanese people, hence the logistical and moral assistance granted to the JEM, Beja People's Congress, and notable the SPLM. So if you view the policy of supporting the two Eastern Sudan armed groups, it would seem that they did so not to replace a negotiated peace, but to bring the GoS to the negotiating table. I disagree with your analysis of Eritrea's motivations. I added the ICG report that all the news reports are quoting for the "three times as many troops as in Darfur" info. The description relevant here, on page 5, begins with the sentence, "Relations began to sour, however, after Asmara accused Khartoum of training Islamic extremists, in particular the Eritrean Islamic Jihad Movement, which made military incursions into Eritrea in 1994." Long story short - Eritrea actually militarized the Beja Congress in the mid 1990s and has been supporting the Eastern Front in retaliation for Sudanese support for some militant anti-government groups. It's pure power politics (especially with the SPLA) and moral good doesn't come into it at all. I would be interested to hear if it came about strictly due to the bilateral relationship, or if the recent heightened tensions with Ethiopia led the Eritrean government to make nice with its other neighbors.

In any case, I've merged the two short sections on the peace talks into one so "reversal" no longer appears. The wording is not a major deal. - BanyanTree 17:49, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

I think this would be an interesting discussion because if you do look at this in the way of Bismarkian Realpolitik then it would seem that the reversal was not only on the Eritrean side but on the Sudanese side as well; the GoS had no intention of negotiating with the Eastern rebels until they became cornered by the combination of the Darfur conflict, the Eastern Sudan problem, and the SPLM...but regardless, I think if we are to continue the convo it should either be over IM or on our User pages :) --Merhawie 19:11, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Referendum information

I haven't been able to find a source for the claim regarding the future referendum about merging the three Eastern states into a single state... Help, anyone? —Nightstallion (?) 13:57, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
