Needs details, sourcing edit

  Resolved
 – Too inspecific to actually act on.

The last paragraph looks to need supporting details, such as place and event, and preferably a citation. [--anon.]

Marking this "Resolved" as it is undated, inspecific as to the issues raised, and almost certainly no longer applies to "the last paragraph" since material is added and moved around in articles all the time. I would encourage the original poster (or anyone else) use use the {{Fact}} template to identify material they believe is unsourced or improperly sourced. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 19:54, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sportsmanship edit

Having personally watched many Strickland matches, there's no question about his sportsmanship :) The question is, how to cite something? I have a personal collection of matches where his sportsmanship is self evident.

Perhaps we can simply call him...volatile?

Sportsmanship is not necessarily a barrier into the BCA hall of fame in any case.

I personally have very much enjoyed watching Earl play; especially when towards the end of a match he made a fantastic shot and said something to the effect he would play his way out of it. I wish for only the most accurate and authenticated article on him.

Agreed. This half-article already has serious WP:NPOV problems as do several others (Ronnie O'Sullivan comes to mind as does one of the articles on the Filipino players, I forget which one - they were all added around the same time and in just about equally bad state of stubness.) Given WP:BLP, this article should err on the side of assuming Strickland's good faith. Any sources as to his being cantankerous need to be even more reliable than would otherwise be required. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 19:57, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Update: I made an attempt to remove point of view, let me know what you think. I also moved the BCA nomination to the intro, as I felt that summed him up as an important player.
The latter was definitely good. As for the rest, I think you may've taken too much out; see the other player articles (and esp. that of ref Michaela Tabb for addl. source information. I don't think the article is terribly weakened or anything, but rather that we probably already have copy-pasteable sources for a few of the removed details (some of which weren't POV points, by the way, such as the M.C. tie score bit, and a few other points.) — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 20:31, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reference Section edit

I am unable to include a Reference link to the BCA website referencing Earl Strickland's induction into the Hall of Fame. If anybody can add it in there, that would be a great reference to add, I think. Earl Strickland, American Champion Pool Player edit

I inserted the REFERENCE link for Earl Strickland being inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame 2006.

I am trying to gather some references and sources, as well as photographs to place on the Earl Strickland article. I have acquired some and will post them up as soon as I smooth them out.

Earl, IMHO, is an American pool champion and is worthy of a GREAT article on Wikipedia. So I am going to contribute as much as I can gather and hope that this article will be representative of this legendary pool player.

Earl Strickland Photo edit

I removed the photo, as I read the above objection about the use of my personal photo of Earl Strickland not meeting the encylopedia guidelines.

I will try to obtain another one that meets the encylopedia guidelines. RailbirdJAM 15:13, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

NPOV removal edit

Please review the updated and edited article and see if it meets the Wikipedia guidlines, so that there can be a removal of NPOV at the beginning. Thank you in advance. RailbirdJAM 13:43, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think someone should review the sources cited for the controversial stuff and make sure that they actually say what our article says, and also consider how authoritative they are. Were they written by eyewitnesses? Are they quoting Strickland's rivals? Do any of them quote Strickland talking about these incidents himself and confirming the interpretations presented here? Also, I'd suggest moving all of that material to a new "Controversy" section, so that it is not intermingled with the main article prose. As with some of the Filipino player bios, there seems to be a gossippy, pointless focus on the "juicy" negative stories. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 11:03, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Background section awkward edit

For example "Because of his intense shooting style, he has engaged in back-and-forth colloquys with fans, players, referees, and tournament officials. " That sentence doesn't quite work.

In general, I found the background section awkward. I don't really know what the proper bio style is for wikipedia, though.

It would seem to read better to suggest personality traits, and then follow each trait up with a specific anecdote, perhaps.

I lack proper Strickland articles because I no longer have subscriptions to the two major pool and billiards magazines, so I don't think I can do much better. It would be nice to get some of those articles on him, and carefully incorporate their content into this article, which would also allow us to cite specifics.

MichaelJHuman 03:32, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Any discussion of alleged personality traits has to be well-sourced, per WP:BLP. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 10:54, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Billiards Digest labeled Earl Strickland and Keith McCready as "loose cannons" when reporting about a Skins Billiards Championship which took place at the Resorts in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a couple years ago (I will try to find cite written by Mason King) and in the next paragraph stated that the promoters were "lucky" and happy to have both of these "loose cannons" make the TV rounds because of their entertaining style of play. Any suggestions on what would make my contribution more acceptable to any dissenters of this Wikipedia contribution to the Earl Strickland article? Thanks in advance! RailbirdJAM 17:56, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Use direct quotations (e.g. 'Billiards Digest writer John Q. Public labeled Strickland, along with fellow pro Keith McCready, "loose cannons", but also noted that Jane Doe, president of tour promoter ABC Cues, said "we're very lucky to have players like Strickland and McCready, because their flamboyant style is a real draw for the TV audience".<ref name="...">{{Cite...}}</ref>'). That avoids any impression at all that Wikipedia itself is labelling them flamboyant, or TV-valuable, or both. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 03:27, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
