Talk:EMD SW900

Five Canadian SW900s were built after regular production had ended. The last SW900 built by GMD in March 1969 was BC Hydro #911. All Candian SW900s were built by GMD, not EMD. See A J Kristopans website here for GMD built diesel locomotives: http://community-2.webtv.net/ajkristopans/GENERALMOTORSDIESEL/ --SSW9389 (talk) 23:56, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Larry Russell's GM Export page at http://emdexport.railfan.net/frame_layout.html lists 15 SW900 exports: Guinea 1, Liberia 5, Peru 2, and Venezuela 7. I could not find production data to confirm these units. --SSW9389 (talk) 11:31, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Found production data on 14 units on AJ Kristopans webpage: Orinoco Mining Co 1090-1096 (Venezuela) Southern Peru Copper Co 9-10 Liberian-American Mining Co 201-205 No data on the Guinea unit so it may be a used unit exported. --SSW9389 (talk) 16:58, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone know if the last five GMD built SW900s were built with an 8V-567E block. Also which SW900s were built with the 8V-567CR engines?--SSW9389 13:43, 12 August 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by SSW9389 (talkcontribs)

Additional SW900's edit

You are missing a few SW900's, I'm afraid... Firstly, Alabama By-products 900 from 8/56. Then, more that are true SW900's, but were built before EMD changed their policy regarding trade-ins and serials. Up to very early 1957, a unit built with a trade in (7500 series order number) kept the serial of the trade-in, after that, a new serial was assigned. This affected E8's, a few F7's, and a small number of switchers. The 18 SW900's in question are as follows [1]:

Steelton & Highspire 21, 27 10/56, 9/55 Northern Pacific 100 1/57 Great Lakes Steel 6-7 8/56 Lehigh Valley 120,122,124,126,127 10/55,9/56,5/55,7/56,5/56 Philadelphia Bethlehem & New England 51-52 11/55 Reading 10-15 4,7,1,5,8,6/56

Also, note should be made of the SW900's built with trade-ins that were rated at 660 hp because of reusing the main generator of the traded-in Winton. Why not just classify them as SW600's? Because they had an 8 cylinder motor. A waste, for sure.. Anyway, these are Lehigh Valley 106, 107, 110, Reading 10-15, Rock island 550-563.

Another small matter - Grand Trunk Western 7225-7226 were originally Grand Trunk (Eastern) - Lines in Maine.

Lastly, the Reading Baldwins mentioned were VO1000's that were re-engined by EMD (8500 order numbers) with 1200 hp motors and renumbered 2701-2714.
