File:Bufo melanosticus 01.JPG to appear as POTD soon edit

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Bufo melanosticus 01.JPG will be appearing as picture of the day on January 3, 2012. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2012-01-03. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :) Thanks! howcheng {chat} 22:38, 31 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Common Indian Toad (Duttaphrynus melanostictus) is native to South Asia. It grows to about 20 cm (8 in) long and breeds during monsoon season. These toads are often seen at night under street lamps especially during times when winged termites swarm. They have been noted to feed on a wide range of invertebrates, including scorpions.Photo: Lokionly

A species or not a species? edit

This article states, "It is probably a complex of more than one toad species that is widely distributed in South Asia." However, the rest of the article AND the article's title seem to indicate that it is a single species. In fact, the article uses "the species" to describe the Common Indian Toad quite frequently. Something needs to change, no? StoryMakerEchidna (talk) 21:22, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

The article on the Species problem might be useful. It is currently treated as a single species but it is possible that they are made up of long separated lineages but will have to wait for further research. Shyamal (talk) 02:38, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

"potentially more damaging than the cane toad" edit

The Page, Kirkpatrick and Massam reference doesn't compare Duttaphrynus melanostictus and Rhinella marina (cane toad) in terms of likely damaging effects. Although the phrase "potentially more damaging than the cane toad" is smattered around various news items and press releases I can't find a reliable source.
