Poetry scene, in which she was involved from the late 1920s, and included intimate connections with early San Francisco Renaissance figures like Sara Bard Fields, Clarkson Crane, Kenneth Rexroth ( a life-long friend) and friendships with later figures like Robert Balzer and Allen Ginsberg. Elsa wrote the first purely sapphic poetry published in the United States. *Jazz scene in the 1950s with Dizzy Gilespie the poster child for the term ' Beatnik'; rock music legend Nel Young enjoyed the company of Roger Somers during the scene in the 1960s. Women's movement in the 1970s created a hope of a women's retreat at the heights. With the death of Elsa Gidlow in 1986, Elsa's Estate created Druid Heights Artist's Retreat. Elsa had wanted a place that compatible women could retreat and create. Elsa outlines her ideas about the retreat in her autobiography, Elsa: I Come With My Songs, on page 412.

• Watts and his wife "Jano" moved permanently to Druid Heights in 1969 after the scene on the Vallejo began to attract too many groupies. (Furlong 1986, 165)
• Ashes of Watts and Gidlow are buried here. Reports say Elsas' ashes are under an apple tree in her garden and Alan's are beneath a simple marker near his library , both at Druid Heights. Alan Died in the 'Mandala' house on the site, while Elsa died in hospice.
