I beg your pardon?!

Earlier today I corrected the biographical information in the article stating that Douglas is a "Brazilian footballer". This is incorrect, he is Dutch, as is stated later in the article itself (because he was naturalized, he had to give up his Brazilian passport). However, I got a message saying this was an "unconstructive edit" and appeared to constitute "vandalism". The way the article is currently worded is contradictory. He is Dutch, he does not have a double passport. It is true that because he hasn't played for the Dutch national team yet, and he was born in Brazil, he is still eligible to play for Brazil according to FIFA rules. However, because his nationality is Dutch, his national allegiance should default to Dutch, unless it is switched. No - just because he has acquired Dutch nationality is irrelevant, no evidence that is his primary sporting nationality. GiantSnowman 09:00, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

How can something not be your primary sporting nationality, when you can get selected for their national team? Every international player on Wikipedia who has been naturalized or switched allegiances is listed under their new nationality or double nationality, are you honestly saying that because Douglas hasn't played for the Netherlands yet, even though he was selected for them on at least one occasion, his nationality has to stay listed as Brazilian? Stuart McCall was called-up to the England under-21s, but never played - would you have had him listed as English, even though he later played at full international level for Scotland? GiantSnowman 11:32, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

In my opinion being called up for a senior national team is different from being called up to the under-21s. In the case of Stuart McCall, I would have him listed as English, seen as how he was born in England, until he was called up for Scotland, even if he didn't play. But with British players it is different, because they don't change nationality. Anyway, I understand that "nationality" in Wikipedia articles about sportspeople refers to sporting nationality, unlike in articles about literally all other people on Wikipedia. Even though I find this a bit odd (what do you do, for example, when after retirement from their sport they embark on a different career), I understand the rationale for it. This notwithstanding, in the case of Douglas, since his nationality is Dutch and he is eligible to play for both the Netherlands (the country of his nationality) and Brazil (the country of his birth, of which he does not possess the nationality), it would make more sense to have him listed as Dutch, or at least Dutch-Brazilian. If I may raise a counterexample to your example, even though Collins John was born in Liberia, and therefore under FIFA rules is eligible to play for their national team, I doubt you would have listed him as a "Liberian footballer" even before he played for any Dutch national team (I don't know if he had a Wikipedia article back then, I wasn't really using Wikipedia at the time).

Anyway, I do not wish to needlessly prolong this discussion, since I'm probably going to lose anyway, but would you at least grant me that my edit was made in good faith, and did not constitute vandalism?92.111.65.127 (talk) 22:08, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
