We are aware that the wording on Cornish entries can sometimes be a contentious topic, especially those concerning geography. This article has the tag ”English monarch”. However, during this person’s life Cornwall was not yet incorporated into England. Cornish people were culturally Celtic and at war with their Anglo-Saxon neighbours in Wessex.

"He was probably an under-king, paying tribute to the West Saxons"
This usage implies to "pay tribute" did at one time have a different meaning to today's conventional usage of complimenting or eulogising somebody. The expression would therefore benefit from a side reference to what meaning is intended in this case. Does this mean the word "tribute" by itself has an earlier lost meaning? I have checked three dictionaries and they all define tribute in the sense used here as one of their definitions. E.g. Merriam-Webster "a payment by one ruler or nation to another in acknowledgment of submission or as the price of protection". Dudley Miles (talk) 20:38, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
