Untitled edit

The tone of this article reads like promotional material for Carter. For example, "conducted exclusive interviews with prominent figures" and "He is the anchor of NY1's long-running news and commentary program", and "He has appeared on the cover of the New York Times TV guide". --Preacher ashcroft (talk) 20:15, 14 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Copy Editing/Tone Tag edit

  • I've worked this article over some. Still needs more information, which I think is available. But right now I don't think language, style, or tone is any longer an issue. So, I've removed the language/tone/copy edit tag. Doctorfun (talk) 07:56, 31 December 2008 (UTC) (cleanup volunteer)Reply
  • And I don't think we have the issue of blatant advertisement language either. I removed the tag. Doctorfun (talk) 08:16, 31 December 2008 (UTC) (cleanup volunteer)Reply
  • I removed the remaining tags from this article. I think all the initial issues have been addressed. If not, I'm sure someone will re-tag it. Thanks. Doctorfun (talk) 03:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC) (cleanup volunteer)Reply

Controversial Material edit

This is a biography of a living person. Controversial allegations must be treated tactfully and with care. Doctorfun (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:29, 31 October 2009 (UTC).Reply

We need an administrator to review this article. It's a biography of a living person and I think some of the content about domestic violence allegations that has been recently added is potentially inappropriate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Doctorfun (talkcontribs) 21:01, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I disagree that the information about domestic violence is inappropriate, given that these aren't random allegations but criminal charges that are documented as part of the public record. I'm referring not only to the recent charges, but to the incidents from 2003 and 2007 as well. After my initial edit I went back and took out the allegations made by Carter's brother-in-law, but things that have been documented in police reports and court records seem to be relevant information. Also, the charges are getting a significant amount of media coverage, much more so than anything Carter has been mentioned for in the past outside of his own journalism, so it seems like a pretty glaring omission to not give a little more detail about something as significant as this. Domestic violence is a very serious issue that is often minimized, to the detriment of it's victims, and should be taken as seriously as other crimes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.46.168.111 (talk) 05:06, 2 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Domestic violence is a very serious issue but we cannot draw our own conclusions here. We're just reporting neutrally what's clearly factual, and taking special care with WP:BLP articles which have their own more stringent guidelines. Since his wife in the citations listed not only recanted her accusation but begged to have the case dropped I'm not sure we're really serving that neutrality well if we take a tact that goes against even her clearly stated wishes. - Owlmonkey (talk) 05:34, 2 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I read over the guidelines for WP:BLP articles and couldn't find anything dealing with criminal charges that are part of the public record. I checked out some other wiki pages of public figures with criminal charges made against them and found them represented fairly. As for the wife changing her story in court, this is commonly done by people in abusive relationships. Legally, a judge is still able to rule against him regardless, given the information in her sworn statement to the police. I feel like I was representing the issue neutrally by presenting both her original story AND what she later changed it to, both of which are part of the public record. If you could please find specific guidelines that would cover this issue, I would appreciate it. If not, I think the domestic violence charges should be given a fair mention. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.46.168.111 (talk) 23:12, 2 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I agree with the above editor. The charges are certainly notable, and have been covered in every major news outlet in New York City. This is not gossip -- Carter has been charged with a violent crime in New York State court as a matter of public record, and that fact is notable and verifiable, and as such absolutely deserves mention in this article. 24.42.78.97 (talk) 08:05, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's one thing to say charges were filed, but the edits lately have gone WAY beyond that and are axe grinding. A truly notable mention would be merely that he has a pending charge. period. there's no need to go further in an encyclopedia. BLP requires that we be extra careful here, with very good reason. - Owlmonkey (talk) 04:03, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
