- The etymology is said to derive from the name of the Spanish commander in charge of Spanish forces in the Southern Netherlands in the 16th Century. He was called the Duque de Alba or le Duc d'Albe in French. These structures were widely introduced during his period in office. The local people, who spoke Flemish, called the structure a dukdalf or plural dukdalven. English speakers turned dukdalf into dolphin. Everybody got to be somewhere!
