Pronunciation?

Hi Kwamikagami, I'm just wondering why you changed the pronunciation tag to the nativename one in the infobox on this one... Doesn't the IPA pronunciation belong there? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 04:30, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, if it were English. But as it was, people might think that was the pronunciation of one of the names with the colored background. Well, they still might. We should probably have the native name in orthography followed by the IPA. — kwami (talk) 05:02, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Okay, thanks, Kwamikagami. I'll leave it to you as I'm not as familiar with the pronunciation or WP conventions re languages. How do we know the native name of oral languages though? Aren't the various spellings just approximations, based on how they sound, presumably to a speaker and writer of (in this case) Australian English? There are various conventions for Australian languages, so any one of them would work. They're mostly fairly unambiguous. But in this case there's a revitalization effort, so we'd presumably use whatever spelling they do. — kwami (talk) 11:03, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

I did some work on this one some time ago, and remember noticing that the current organisations are spelt Dieri, but the article name uses the alternative, and within the article it's inconsistent. Perhaps time to discuss a move? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 12:02, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
