This is my first review, so apologies for any delays or initial problems that might arise. I will be mentored by User:Jezhotwells who will undoubtedly guide me towards an accurate and comprehensive review. As this is my first time I will begin by reading the article a performing the initial checks. The comments and review will be shown to my mentor before posting here. GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose):   b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
*Lead: it is a little short as the article is 35,640 chars, and so should have three or four paragraphs(Wikipedia:Lead#Length). More importantly it does not adequately summarise the body of text; merely mentioning its geographic location and the name of its French twin.
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references):   b (citations to reliable sources):   c (OR):
*The article has many instances of copyvio, or cutpaste: DuplicationDetector results War memorial, DuplicationDetector results EMR.AC, DuplicationDetector results Culpepper family, DuplicationDetector results Turnpike, Newsprint1, and plagiarism from Newsprint2. These will need to be re-written, or removed. The DuplicationDetector has the exact phrases found so far and can be used to identify the offending text. I have not reported it for copyvio as I am sure the editors will prefer to correct this fairly quickly.
    • Refs:[8] Wetroads.co.uk [1] seems to be a user contributions site. There is a mention of the ford in an already used ref, Ditton Parish Council Gazette Spring 11 (halfway down) that could be used to replace it.
    • [18] Oxford DNB [2] does not show the information referenced, as it requires subscription.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects):   b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales):   b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
*All images lack an |alt= parameter and alt text for visually impaired readers. (Though alt text is not a GA requirement, the parameter is required by MoS)
*There are some images with rather long captions, which could probably be moved to the body of text.
*Odo bayeux tapestry has no licence
*There are some images that appear superfluous: the Community centre, an empty field with some chopped/broken trees, the cricket match.
*The panorama has a settlement in the foreground - is that Ditton? If not, where is it? The caption could be used here to explain which is Ditton if it is not the foreground settlement.
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
I will put on hold for seven days to allow some time for these issues to be addressed.
I also note that some of todays additions appear to also be copyvios, such as "The Cox's Orange Pippin Apple, which was the mainstay of the English apple dessert industry was notoriously difficult to store and required extensive research." which is taken word for word from page 54. Chaosdruid (talk) 15:50, 9 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for pointing out these defects. Some serious editing has taken place and I think the article is now ready to go forward.Shaibalahmar (talk) 14:26, 10 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
It may be that my wording of the alt text and alt parameter were not clear. The |alt= parameter can be blank up to GA, at A class and FA the alt text field should be included. Adding a blank |alt= parameter prevents speech readers from reading out the filename of the image used, which can cause problems for the listener. The alt text is read out by speech readers, as is the caption. The alt text should simply explain what the image is as the caption will most likely explain its relevance. e.g.:
|alt=A photograph of some ships and a crane with its load suspended just above sea-level|caption=Part of the Mary Rose being raised from the sea-bed, illustrating the size of the section recovered.
I have modified three of the alt texts as an example. [3] Chaosdruid (talk) 18:14, 11 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
There are some paragraphs still without refs? Ideally there could be a lot more inserted throughout several sections. Rather than put cns I thought I would mention it here. Chaosdruid (talk) 02:26, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Can you give me three days to fix this? I haven't got much time to devote to it this weekend but should have done it by the end of Monday. Two queries: does the introduction need to be referenced since it simply summarises the main body of text which is already referenced? No problem if it does, just would like to know. Second, some of the knowledge is from personal observation (ie: Ditton borders the River Medway, or the War Memorial is on the corner of the A20 and New Road - I have seen these features myself). How do you reference these? Thanks Shaibalahmar (talk) 10:06, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I think that should be ok, I will check on the extension.
The lead does not have to have refs in it. If the material is included in the body of text and is cited that is fine.
Hmmm. That second one is a little more difficult, especially as you are admitting it is WP:OR lol :¬) Can you find/take a picture of the war memorial that shows the road name? Or perhaps there is a council website for that sort of thing (I know that blue plaques are usually mentioned on council website) - then there are the old ordnance survey maps, they usually have them on there and will show the river Medway (though it can be tricky if the towns have expanded somewhat in the last 40 years). I will have a look for you to see if I can find anything. Chaosdruid (talk) 16:40, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have this one: "runs on to the river Medway, which is the northern boundary of this parish," British History Online from the University of London & History of Parliament Trust. That's that one fixed, it may well have info on there for some others as well - it mentions Tilson as the rector and vicar (and his son of the same name who was vicar following him).
There is also some info in there about Sifletone. It also talks of "On the disgrace of the bishop of Baieux, Ditton became confiscated to the crown" Wow, what was this disgrace? any ideas? This one was for nicking money from the churches and abandoning his job of looking after England while Willian (the conqueror) was away in Normandy and had left him in charge.
Ah! a little search and, it seems that there was a revolt against William II (rather than the conqueror)- Odo signed up for it (p.433) and ended up taking over Rochester with hundreds of men (p.436) The ecclesiastical history of England and Normandy, Volume 2 Chaosdruid (talk) 20:21, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
There was a suggestion that Odo was planning a military expedition to Italy in order to instal himself as Pope. William confiscated all his lands, including Ditton and Siffletone which then devolved to various barons etc. Siffletone seems to have been swallowed up Ditton Manor by the time Hasted wrote his 1798 account. Thanks for the advice about the Medway Valley etc.Shaibalahmar (talk) 20:37, 16 July 2011 (UTC)]]Reply

All that aside, it is looking in pretty good shape. I need to do a copyedit and check that there is at least one ref per para and that all pertinent claims have a ref attached. I don't think we need to extend it, unless something turns up during the last checks, which I will get on to that in a little while (late dinner). Chaosdruid (talk) 21:13, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Is the Ditton Primary school the Ditton Church of England Primary School? In other words are there three schools or two? The Education section says that the infant school shares its site with the "Ditton Junior School", though it is not quite clar if it is the same one previously mentioned. Chaosdruid (talk) 01:29, 17 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have comnpleted a copy-edit and provided a few refs for various sections, particularly the "Social and leisure activities" section. The Kentish Quarryman still needs a ref though. Chaosdruid (talk) 03:32, 17 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think I've covered everything, added some references to other sections as well, so please go ahead when you're ready.Shaibalahmar (talk) 07:16, 17 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
