About Tshwane edit

"The Tshwane municipality (which includes the city of Pretoria) has the largest white population of any place on the African continent." This statement confuses me - it is not true as written, because the Cape Town, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni metros all have numerically larger numbers of white people. (Per the Community Survey 2007: 680 000, 580 000 and 540 000 respectively, compared to 520 000 for Tshwane). If it is referring to white people as a proportion of the total population, then there are a lot of municipalities with greater proportions of white people, eg. Midvaal, Overstrand, Potchefstroom, Saldanha Bay. - htonl (talk) 20:33, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

You have an excellent point. At first I think I meant to state the sentance along the lines of cities, rather than municipalities. Since we don't have proper date for cities, but only for municipalities, I agree that it should be removed. But I hope you understand what I am trying to say? I am talking about the city, not municip. This kinda developed into Tshwane over time. I will remove the sentance :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 20:47, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I do see what you're trying to say, and in fact I can support it with some data. In the 2001 Census, the "main place" with the largest number of white people is in fact Pretoria with 360 000, where Pretoria is defined as the area shown in this map. (Second is Jo'burg at 230 000 and third is Cape Town at 170 000 - as with Pretoria/Tshwane these are smaller areas than the metro municipalities.) On the other hand, the significant main place - I am arbitrarily defining "significant" to mean having a population of at least 1000 - with the greatest proportion of whites is Onrusrivier, which is 97% white. (Orania is 98% white, but it only has a population of 519.) By comparison, Pretoria (again as defined in the linked map) is only 68% white. If you want, you can see all the main place statistics in this spreadsheet which is extracted from the Census 2001 community profile database. - htonl (talk) 22:11, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Assessment edit

I reclassified from Start to C-Class - I think all this article needs to be at least B-Class, is some more citations. #4 to #6 doesn't give any real indication of what source they're from? Some more inline citations would be good, as well, even if they're repeats of #1 using the <ref name= form.

Major population centres.

I think the comparison of the new 2011 with the 2001 census results can be misleading as there have been a large number of boundary changes. Stellenbosch hasn't, for example gone from 45% white to 65% white because of a "boost" in the white population but because new figures exclude places which were more coloured or black coloured. Similarly, Meyerton might have more than doubled in white people but maybe that could be more explained by the fact the "main place" increased by 40% in land area. I am thankful for the statistics but to a reader they may appear misleading :) Also I feel the languages section might need some work. Htonl has been able to breakdown the white population by language so possibly that can be done for each area? There are a heck of a coloureds, asians and (recently) blacks that now speak Afr. and Eng natively so maybe these figures should be looked into? Thanks for all the work Bezuidenhout (talk) 21:14, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, it is statistically completely invalid to compare the main places in 2001 with the main places in 2011 and then talk about the change in white population or percentage. The boundaries for places with the same name are in many cases completely different. If you want to make that sort of comparison it has to be at the municipal level - while there have been some changes in municipal boundaries they are generally minor. (Or they are cases where municipalities have been merged since 2001, and you can recalculate 2001 statistics for the merged area.) - htonl (talk) 21:38, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
