Major Revision Needed

The article needs increased focus on modern head techologies like MR, GMR, and TMR. A discussion of the role of the write pole and its structure would also be useful. Bruce C. Schardt 07:14, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Multiple Read-Write Heads per platter side?

Are there any hard disks w/ multiple R-W heads per platter side?

I saw a community asking about this.

It has been tried, but no, there aren't. For the cost of a second head assembly, actuator, and read/write channel electronics, it's better to just add separate platters.

Physical and logical heads

I see on the Western Digital web site that they talk about "physical" and "logical" heads, each drive having different amount of those two. An explanation of the difference would be nice :). Thanks! Karih 23:32, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)

Logical heads might be those which are seen for CHS access method, these are a part of a way to access the disk. Physical heads might be phsical heads in drive. --Yyy 09:36, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

This article is about the physics of (physical) read/write heads. Anything "logical" is a software convention that has no place in this article.

Whither drums, tape and optical disks?

This article concerns itself only with disk read-write heads, but much of the technology for drums and tape is similar, and it seems pointless to have separate articles for them.
