It would have been interesting to find mention of the mysterious hot spots in this wilderness area that have ignited brush fires. Scientists propose either an underground chemical reaction or "underground pathways or fractures" that are associated with deeper magma.....
You're right--I've heard of this too. I'm looking for a reliable published source so I can add it. Evidently there was an article in Nature (the LA times link was dead).
