Derry, County Sligo edit

Is there really a place called Derry in County Sligo, or was its addition to this page a piece of vandalism? I ask this question because after seeing it here, I recently added the place to the list of towns and villages in the County Sligo article, only to have it deleted again a couple of days later. So I wonder if someone with a good knowledge of the county could clear this up. Thanks 81.152.144.209 11:19, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The map on this website appears to suggest that the place does exist. 81.152.144.209 11:58, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the late reply, but I've been away for a while. I was the one who deleted this link from the County Sligo page, as I'd never heard of a place called Derry in County Sligo (I've lived here all my life). Having seen this comment (and the similar one you wrote on Sarah777's Talk Page, I followed the link from there (fallingrain.com) left by ww2censor. It does appear to show a place called Derry in south County Sligo, not far from Castlebaldwin, on the shore of Lough Arrow, the same place mentioned on the map at stilwell.co.uk (above). Hmmm.
I then searched on google maps for Derry, Ireland, but all I got was a street called Derry, somewhere in County Clare (!). Therefore, I copied the co-ordinates for Derry, Sligo from fallingrain.com and plugged them (54.0878, -8.3258) into google maps. The green arrow points to the same location, but it is named on Google as Ballindoon. Now Ballindoon, which I have heard of, is literally a crossroads (see the followingabove link). Although this may be WP:OR, I still don't believe that Derry, Sligo exists.
Anyone else got any thoughts on this?

Interesting indeed. I am going to Ireland in 10 days and must look at some OSI maps anyway, so why not put this on my list of things to do. ww2censor 16:43, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, I think I passed through the place named as Derry, Co. Sligo on the map a few days ago. I say, I think I passed through it, as , while it may exist on maps, it is completely unremarkable when you're there. There's no notable village of any kind. The nearest place of note is a restaurant called Cromleach Lodge (take the western direction at this crossroads, for about 1 km). Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me or I would have taken a photo of this crossroads. Again putting aside WP:OR for a moment (and why not?), even if we agree that this crossroads is called Derry (despite no local signage anywhere nearby to say so, no signage for Ballindoon either, I must point out) it could hardly be called notable just because it's mentioned on maps, could it? --The.Q | Talk to me 14:45, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Based on your WP:OR I'd have to agree! (Sarah777 20:35, 1 November 2007 (UTC))Reply
As the article says it may well just be a very small townland and not notable, or only known to the locals. Have a look at this, though the data may well be identical to fallingrain. Also look at this result page and see how many Derry's there are in Ireland that are not yet on this disambiguation page. Either way, this should really get a speedy tag unless we can substantiate it better. Cheers ww2censor 04:03, 2 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

A tag has been placed on Derry, County Sligo, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

This article refers to somewhere that is nothing more than a name on some maps, not even a collection of houses. To even call it a townland is pushing it.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
