Wikipedia is not a depository

I have rolled back the latest edits which were a full length dump of a source. Wikipedia is a not a depository. Unless the text is critically discussed (i.e. selective quoting), it is not encyclopedia. Also, unless a translation is PD, it should not be included except very selectively, and only if the translation is being critically discussed (i.e. the actual choices made in that translation being of merit). I agree, it is better to include (the freely-available) parts at WikiSource. We already have links for this on the page. Though if someone wants to improve the English translation, they are welcome to do so. --Elonka 14:34, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

It seems that the whole of Dawson's book is publicly available from the Boston University digital theological library here. The digitized text still contains the 1955 copyright notice of Sheed and Ward, the publishers. Mathsci (talk) 15:31, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, the book is publicly available through many sources, such as archive.org.[1] But be careful: Just because a book is "publicly" available at a website, does not mean that the work itself is in the public domain (see WP:COPYRIGHT). For example, just because an image is on a webpage, does not mean that the image is available to be used freely everywhere else. Now, if you can find an actual notice saying that the work is in public domain or is available to be freely-copied, then that's a different situation, and it would be very helpful to include such a formal translation at Wikisource. --Elonka 15:39, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

As I wrote, I believe the book is still under copyright. I didn't write that it was in the public domain, only that it can be accessed by anybody. I mentioned to Adam about the translation, and where to find it, so that he can clean up some of his question-marked passages (and make minor changes, such as replacing "angelic" by "evangelical"). The book was written as a source book for theologians and historians. I don't know anything about the rules for the 1955 copyright for this title (rather than the later title Mission to Asia), but I agree with you that if it is no longer under copyright, it would be a very useful addition on wikisource. In real life, if I wanted a translation from medieval Latin, I would ask my colleague and friend, a praelector in Cambridge. I think Adam was correct in saying that preparing a translation of such a specialised 13C text is actually WP:OR. Have Elonka or John Vandenberg perhaps had some specific training in medieval Latin or history which might suggest otherwise? Mathsci (talk) 22:35, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

WP:NOR only applies to Wikipedia. On Wikisource, volunteers are encouraged to provide their own translations. Check the talkpage for details on who translated a particular work. --Elonka 05:55, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
