Coordinate error

The coordinates in the latest edit by me on June 12, 2011 have been taken from the original Survey of India 1:50000 sheet no. 53 E/13 carried by the expedition and I shall be obliged if these are not disturbed by ignoramuses (ignorami?) who have no knowledge whatsoever about either the pass or the survey topo sheet. The successful expedition report has been reproduced in some detail as the original report in the RGS archives is not readily accessible and the article by member S. Mitra in the prestigious Bengali periodical DESH in 1996 is also difficult to get.

Aye, any source by a 3rd party would be sufficient, Geographical Journal or other RGS publication will do just fine. However, as long as we don't have a citation, adding text from expedition report will fall under original research - which is one of the core stuff for Wikipedians not to do. Rayshade, I understand your caution, but in this case I think it has been carried too far.You have not bothered to check the Leomann map reference,which would have yielded approximately the same coordinates. You have also not bothered to check the coordinates against a reliable map like Google terrain. Though the pass is crossed fairly often, I do not believe anyone other than the original crossing team would bother to calculate the exact lat./long. position.So your 3rd party reference to the coordinates is unlikely to be met.

An account of the 1995 expedition was published in 1996 in the prestigious Bengali magazine Desh , but as you are hardly likely to be able to read and understand the article, I won't bother to cite the reference. It is not online anyway.

I think it was churlish of you to remove the names of the team-members who did the first crossing just because it falls under original research or whatever - it is, begging your pardon, a typically Eurocentric and imperialistic act, of a piece with the exclusion of the names of Sherpas by 'sahibs' who climbed peaks on their shoulders.

Since the original Debsa Pass article was written by me, I suppose that it also falls under 'original research' without '3rd party corroboration'. As such I am removing whatever does not have 'corroboration'.

I don't know what the correct co-ordinates are, but it is definitely not near Bhunter. It is nearer to the Debsa Nala which is located at 32° 0'52.00"N 77°52'18.00"E Engti (talk) 15:00, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

I've been unable to locate the pass and no one else has stepped up to the plate in 10 days. I am, in light of that fact and the foregoing objection, removing the unsourced existing coordinates (31°54′00″N 77°11′08″E) from the article, restoring the {{coord missing}} tag, and deactivating the {{geodata-check}} tag. — TRANSPORTERMAN (TALK) 16:10, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

PS: Just FYI, so some future editor doesn't have to repeat this work: The coords I removed from the article were first added in this edit. As of this writing, that editor has not edited Wikipedia since August, 2008, and has no email address on file. — TRANSPORTERMAN (TALK) 16:14, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
