Notability edit

WP:BASIC and WP:JOURNALIST require that articles on journalists need independent coverage about them, not just citations to content they have written themselves. Being briefly quoted in articles is not really enough, either. It looks like Ewalt's book has been mentioned by some heavy hitters, including the NYT and an excerpt in Salon. Maybe if there are some reviews in solid sources it could meet WP:NBOOK, but coverage about Ewalt is what we need for this article. Being an editor of Forbes is not especially notable in itself, either. Forbes has a distinction between its 'contributors' and its journalists, and it looks like Ewalt is on the contributor side, which is far less encyclopedically noteworthy. Again, content about Ewalt is needed, not content by Ewalt. Grayfell (talk) 05:02, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I did a reasonable search myself after the tag was applied, and was pretty disappointed in what came up. I found book reviews from the WS Journal and the LA Times, so IMHO the book seems to meet GNG, but I don't see much directly detailing this subject. I can't find fault with the tag application. There's a real dearth of sources to draw on. I'd be glad to be shown lazy and incompetent here. BusterD (talk) 05:34, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'm David M. Ewalt, and a Wikipedia editor contacted me to ask if I could supply sources for this Talk page discussion. First, I'd suggest that the bio on my personal web site or even on my LinkedIn profile might provide better, more up-to-date information for this article. For one thing, I'm currently a contributing editor to Forbes magazine; as mentioned in an earlier comment by Grayfell, I am also a "contributor" to Forbes.com, but that's a different position. I was on staff of the magazine for nine years before going freelance; I now write and edit for many outlets, and I have a new book in the works that will be published by Penguin Random House. I also spend a lot of time speaking as an expert on games & technology to the media, to corporations, and at conferences and conventions, perhaps that speaks to notability beyond my work as an author and journalist? Here's video of talks I gave at New York Comic Con, Google and Microsoft Research.

As requested, I can address a few specific notability guidelines: First, "the person ..is widely cited by peers or successors." A Google Scholar search shows several hundred citations in the scholarly literature to articles I have written. In the mainstream media, here are examples of me as a source; talking about consumer electronics to New Hampshire Public Radio, about the world's most powerful people to CNN, about Dungeons & Dragons to The New York Times, and about the iPhone to Attack of the Show. I have lots more links to interviews short and long at outlets big and small, if that's helpful. Second, "the person's work...(c) has won significant critical attention." My book Of Dice & Men was named one of the best books of 2013 by two of the largest booksellers in the United States, Hudson Booksellers and Amazon.com. And reviews appeared in major print publications including The Wall Street Journal, The Seattle Times, Kirkus, and Publisher's Weekly. I can provide more reviews, including many that appeared online or in broadcast media, if you need them. Finally, "the person has created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work... [the subject of] multiple independent periodical articles or reviews." Aside from my book, I created and edited two major lists for Forbes, the Fictional 15 and The World's Most Powerful People. Both of them have received significant global coverage and attention in the media; a Google News search for "Forbes most powerful people" reveals the latest edition of that list alone was covered in more than 260 independent articles from outlets around the world, including TIME, the BBC, RT, Global Television Canada and Radio New Zealand.

I hope that is helpful! Please forgive any style or etiquette mistakes I have made here; I'm a big supporter of Wikipedia's mission but I don't know much about the editing process. Dewalt718 (talk) 01:03, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
