'the title refers to...' edit
The title refers to a trailer-mounted nuclear missile purchased by the family's father figure, as part of his hostile competition with his next door neighbor.
Firstly, the missile belongs not to said father figure Wm. D. Johnson ('Dad'), but to his neighbour-antagonist Jock Smith.
Secondly, the 'nuke' which Dad does possess is his garage nuclear reactor, frequently referred to as 'the nuke' throughout the book.
Thirdly, the nuke that actually does explode at the end of the book is a home-made nuclear bomb constructed by Jock's son Arnold.
