Removed uncited speculation that Cymbospondylus was "not much of a threat to other marine reptiles". edit

This article previously contained the passage:

Despite its size, Cymbospondylus was not much of a threat to other marine reptiles, such as nothosaurus. Its large jaws contained rows of teeth which were so small that they could not have grasped and held on to large animals, let alone kill them. Instead, the teeth were better designed for catching and holding on to small and medium-sized fish, ammonites and belemenites.

This was added by this edit from an IP editor. There is no citation to back it up, and I can't find any outside documentation confirming this statement. It's true that Cymbospondylus did not have the teeth of a specialized apex predator, like the recently discovered Thalattoarchon, but rather the generalized conical teeth typical of most ichthyosaurs. And yes, the BBC programs may have exaggerated its importance as a large predator; from what I can find it seems to have been a generalist feeder. But this statement seems to be taking the opposite extreme. It doesn't look like the teeth of Cymbolspondylus were especially small, but rather were typically proportioned for an ichthyosaur relative to its jaw size. Since the skull was a meter long, I don't think you can confidently say that the animal couldn't take on larger prey, and unless someone can find a good citation stating such, I think such supposition should be removed. I've edited the passage to state more conservatively that the teeth were adapted for catching fish, ammonites and belemnites. --Colin Douglas Howell (talk) 19:52, 8 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal edit

I propose merging Chonespondylus into Cymbospondylus, because the fist one is a junior synonym to second genus since Merriam (1902).Amirani1746 (talk) 12:20, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
