Inline sourcing and a pic for the infobox for starters. Hurricanehink (talk) 23:04, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I did the references bit!! Though I don't know if I wrote up the sources correctly. What else can I add to the article????????? I am definitely not going to add a picture, because I'm confused about the image policy and copyright tags and everything. (RaNdOm26 08:56, 4 July 2006 (UTC))Reply
Looking good so far. You could add info on preparations/aftermath, as well as English units in parenthesis. I'll add a pic if you want. --Hurricanehink (talk) 13:26, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
The NRL imagery for Steve is probably the best bet to find better pictures. One thing to clarify is the time details, Eastern Standard Time is used for 3 timezones, its making clear that it is the Australian timezones being referred to.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:26, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Good job. I think that's B class worthy. --Hurricanehink (talk) 13:21, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
YAY!!!!!!!! My first article has gone to B-class!! Anyway, I found a couple of pretty good pictures that are good for the impact section. They can be found in the Bureau of Meteorology website => http://www.bom.gov.au/info/cyclone/steve/steve_impacts.shtml The ones in the "Northern Territory" are really good, and the ones in Esperance are OK, although they are very big. I think its okay to upload images from that site, since the URL ends with .gov, so I think it'll be good. Glad if you can help. RaNdOm26 16:19, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Congrats on the B. Unfortunately, the images there are not public domain, but under BoM copyright. .gov domains (not .gov.au) are generally good sources, as the work of the US federal govt is PD. Thats not true for most other nations (including Australia). There is probably a fair use case for those images, but I'm not that sure of how that works.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:31, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yea, images are always iffy. You should contact an administrator to see if any of those images could be added. Or, if you want, you could contact the people at the site, and ask for permission to use one of the images. --Hurricanehink (talk) 16:33, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I believe you can use them. On the BoM copyright page Nilfanion mentioned, it says reproduction is permitted if you follow these 2 rules;
  • acknowledge the Bureau of Meteorology as the source of any such material reproduced
  • any reproduction made of the material must include a copy of the original copyright and disclaimer

So does that mean the images can be uploaded? íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 12:19, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wind speed edit

OK, from the Unisys track data [1], the highest wind speed from Steve was 65 knots, which is equal to 120 km/h. Is this wind speed 1-min sustained winds, or 10 min sustained winds? What is the difference between them? What do they mean, anyway?!?!?!?!?! RaNdOm26 18:54, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Unisys track data is that produced by the JTWC (JTWC report on Steve). 1 minute sustained winds is the average windspeed at a location over 1 minute and 10 minute sustained winds the average over 10 minutes. This difference in measurement generally means that 1 minute winds are generally about 14% higher than the 10 minute speeds. See the discussion on Talk:2003 Pacific typhoon season for some more info and read this link.--Nilfanion (talk) 19:56, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
