I removed the section "Historical significance", which consisted of a six-sentence paragraph taken verbatim from the NRHP nomination form. The form was prepared by the Colorado Preservation Office; so not by a federal employee doing federal work, and therefore probably not in public domain. The paragraph was duly quote-marked and a citation provided, but six sentences seems to exceed the bounds of "brief verbatim textual excerpts" specified at WP:NFCCP; a paraphrase would have served the article's purposes just as well. (Following restoration of deleted passage inside "Quotation" template) The problem isn't that the quotation isn't identified as such or that it isn't attributed properly. The Wikipedia policy on the use of copyrighted material states that articles may use "brief verbatim textual excerpts", and a six-sentence paragraph goes beyond a reasonable definition of "brief". Furthermore, a direct quote isn't necessary for this use in the article (as it might be in, for instance, a section dealing with a controversial passage from someone's writings). There's no reason why we shouldn't paraphrase the business about silver maples and lilacs and green sandstone. WP:NFCCP seems to call for a paraphrase instead of a quote when a paraphrase would serve equally well; and I think that's the case here. Ammodramus (talk) 01:58, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

I did a bit of tweaking and was able to get rid of the pull-up quote. I thought it would work better to put all the landscaping stuff together-- topography, curvilinear layout, natural vegetation and landscaping-with-gardens; then to progress to the green sandstone building material; then get down to architecture and distinctive tombs. I thought that the "principal cemetery in Manitou Springs" bit from the original pull-up quote was worth keeping, though as a paraphrase and in the "Overview" section. How does this version strike you?

Cool subject, by the way. I don't suppose we could get a photo of the Richards mausoleum? I've photographed NRHP sites all over the country, but I don't think I've hit an Egyptian Revival site yet... Ammodramus (talk) 03:14, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

Update?

The article was last edited on 19 Sept., just 10 days ago ... but the edit missed the vandal damage on 26 May to 50 monuments and grave sites: https://gazette.com/news/manitou-springs-residents-offer-reward-money-to-find-cemetery-vandals/article_e4c2ddf8-c876-11eb-ad82-3bd2162024f8.html. The arrest of Landon Wayne Johnston on 2 July for the vandalism was reported on 29 July: https://gazette.com/news/arrest-made-in-manitou-springs-cemetery-vandalism/article_b8899be2-f0b1-11eb-98c4-fb8915b88cdf.html. I can't find any further info about his trial or penalty. Ammodramus or CaroleHenson may want to update the article.

Photo of Manitou Springs Historic District

The article doesn't mention the MSHD, and the MSHD page doesn't mention the CVC ... so what's the point of the photo? Incidentally, there is a photo of the Richards mausoleum in Wikimedia Commons; I've replaced the MSHD photo with one of the Richards mausoleum.
