Advanced dewar construction edit

I wish I could remember more, but I was just reading recently an informative article about how advances in the construction of the neck and stoppers had significantly extended the storage time for cryogenic liquids. Rather than just venting the cold vapor boiling off they use it to cool the neck, and so on. It also discussed multiple walls or layers. I'll try to find it again.   Will Beback  talk  07:56, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you're right. There are various things which can be done to improve the thermal insulation. Using multiple insulating layers is known as "superinsulation". Instead of vapour cooling, some liquid helium dewars use liquid nitrogen to cool radiation shields around the contents. I have a copy of "Practical Cryogenics", published by Oxford Instruments which should have some more information about this. Papa November (talk) 08:48, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Safety edit

Copied from Liquid nitrogen vehicle
  • Since the liquid to gas expansion ratio of this substance is 1:694, a tremendous amount of force can be generated if liquid nitrogen is rapidly vaporized. In an incident in 2006 at Texas A&M University, the pressure-relief devices of a tank of liquid nitrogen were sealed with brass plugs. As a result, the tank failed catastrophically, and exploded.[1]

We should probably include something about this.   Will Beback  talk  00:56, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK, I made a start. I added a few other common hazards too. Papa November (talk) 09:50, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Awesome. I see you know the topic well.   Will Beback  talk  10:12, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, most of this just comes from my personal lab experience - we really need to find some sources, but I'm not sure where to look! :S Papa November (talk) 13:35, 23 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
