Cranborne was for many centuries the centre of the hundred of the same name. The Hundred Court - same as Borough Court (anciently holding Burrough Wood to the north, part of the Common at Holwell and rights in Cranborne Common to the east) last sat with the Steward of Cranborne Court Baron, and Court Leet with Sr Mary's Court in the 19th Century. If the requisite freeholds (2 or 12) from pre Quia Emptores Terrarum 1290 can be found the Hundred Court could sit again. Pre 1215 or so the Courts sat in the Hall and Bower situate east of Castle Hill or "castle moot" as the caput of Albretesberga (latin) for the "borough" ie beorh not beorg (see Paterson Honor of Gloucester Charters). This Court Steward lands extended from "Castle-Mound" to the Chapel field by Dead Man's corner (1180 freehold) to Great and Lesser Covenbury fields back to Cranborne Lodge (site of the Court Steward Office and Yards) to a strip of land up to the present Manor House and Church, round Castle Hill Lane. Hydes of Land immediately around the Moot (always held in socage to the Court Steward) for the Borough are about 120 acres each eg field names at Holwell next to the present day Watercress Beds and at Covenbury fields noting "Lynchett style field" with neolithic plough lines to the south.

The Castle is only recorded as such in the Despencer Wars AD 1322 onwards. The Neolithic Mound (a perfect spherical cap, 1 / 12 of the diameter 97.2 meters) and Banks are perfect ratios for a "Thom" oval calender of Planet Earth and the Sun and Moon.
