it'd be nice to have some detail on why people use this technology.

Would someone who has more skills with editing Wikipedia pages please add to the "Mathematical description" section of this page. I've checked the "CCK (Complementary Code Keying)" page at [1] and found it to be accurate and readily understandable. Adding links to Wikipedia's "Autocorrelation" article and to its "Complementary sequences" article would appreciated.
