Talk:Common Council of the Church

Date of Revelation on Doctrine and Covenants 107:82-84 edit

For ChristensenMJ: The date cited in this article on the revelation on the "Common Council of the Church" has two issues: 1. The introduction to D&C 107 states that "Although this section was recorded in 1835, the historical records affirm that most of verses 60 through 100 incorporate a revelation given through Joseph Smith on November 11, 1831." This is why I corrected the date. 2. The phrase "Common Council of the Church" is not used in the revelation - simply "common council." The emphasis in this article points to a Common Council conducted by the Presiding Bishop of the Church, but again this phrase is not used in the revelation. Reference "a" in vs 82 goes to vs' 74-76 which refers to "other bishops (acting) in the same office." Any bishop can conduct a Common Council against a President of the High Priesthood. These are the Church President or a Stake President. Should this article remain as written or changed to reflect Common Councils in general? Perhaps a new topic "Common Councils in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" should be begun. Your view? I'm new at this, so please forgive any protocol errors. The Role of the Presiding Bishop in the Common Council edit

In a call to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Presiding Bishop’s Office (PBO), in Salt Lake City, Utah, 5 April 2021, the PBO stated that they had no "ecclesiastical role in the Church" and therefore do not conduct Common Councils. They said their role was purely in "temporal affairs." They referred me to my local Bishop and Stake President for any charges against the First Presidency. When I requested more information, I was transferred without my knowledge to the Security Department of the Church. From my personal experience in 2018 and 2020, two local Bishops in my Utah Stake refused to conduct a Common Council, and in Missouri, three Bishops refused. I must conclude that the Common Council (D&C 107:82-84) has no relevance in the view of Church leaders today. F15Kiwi (talk) 22:29, 6 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
