He is also the writer of as powerful a slice of life as you will see anywhere, including in your own tame domain - "Kisses at Fifty", which I saw in about 1973. A marvellously memorable piece of TV theatre. Heck, 'This Sporting Life' is one of his. Life of blood and bone on celluloid. Great writer.

Birthplace? edit

IMDB lists him as born in Leigh, Lancashire. This article reads differently. Could we please have some cited verified information on this? Thanks. Softlavender (talk) 07:24, 27 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I imagine people would ignore this request for over six years. Or even until he died. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:22, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Birth details edit

His birth is here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVQC-1L8X . Middle initial E. Birth registered in Liverpool. Mother's maiden name Downes. Marriage here: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV6W-PSVD . Middle initial E. Parents marriage here: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVZY-YKVB . John A Williams and Norah J Downes in Liverpool. Probably sister here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVQ3-5CVW also in Liverpool. Tends to make me think he was actually born in Liverpool. Nigej (talk) 09:03, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I agree, your research looks convincing. Trouble is every single one of the WP:RS sources I've looked at says Leigh. I wonder if we can determine when this article was changed - was it soley in response to the observation in the thread above, six years ago, by User:Softlavender? Martinevans123 (talk) 11:26, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hold up. I collected several RS obits and I'll check them and other stuff .... Softlavender (talk) 11:28, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
One never knows whether even RS obits are copying Wikipedia or IMDB, but most of the RS obits I'm seeing (like the one already cited in the article) say born in Leigh and grew up in Liverpool, it seems. I'm going to have to investigate further based on Nigej's evidence above. It seems "Leigh" probably originated with IMDB, which actually for many years now has had very stringent proof-requirements for birthplaces, but it could well be that that was input before the stringent requirements were instated. Softlavender (talk) 11:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Let's try to see if we can get a print source (such as a book, etc.) that pre-dates the existence of IMDB. As far as the Wayback Machine goes back on his IMDB page (2004), it says Leigh. So let's try to find a book that predates the very late 1990s. Softlavender (talk) 12:05, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Good idea. Even the Liverpool Echo says he did not move there until the age of five. So we'll leave this in your capable hands. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:12, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Capable? Moi? Nothing drives me crazier than UK locations and their confusing and changing names, counties, boundaries, historic whatchamacallits, designated whatchamacallits, informal whatchamallits, etc. In any case, in another piecemeal finding, out of five pre-2000 encyclopedias on GoogleBooks, four list Liverpool and one lists Leigh. (One 2008 encyclopedia lists Liverpool.) [1] -- Softlavender (talk) 12:18, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, I'm still putting out feelers, but as far as I'm concerned you can change it back to Liverpool per all of what we have discovered. Can add a footnote that most obituaries have been in error, as has IMDB. NB: Look also at the post at the very top of this page -- the first post ever on this talk page. Also, in terms of the age five thing, the most I can determine is that he seems to have moved from Kensington, Liverpool to Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside (just outside of Liverpool) when he was five (see the second post made by Mike). So I think people (obits) are cobbling together a scenario out of bits and pieces of correct and incorrect info and trying to make it plausible. Softlavender (talk) 13:34, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
As if anyone at Wikipedia ever "cobbled together a scenario out of bits and pieces of correct and incorrect info and tried to make it plausible" lol Martinevans123 (talk) 13:36, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I think the "Leigh" confusion sprang originally from the fact that he taught art in school in Leigh in his early adulthood, before he started acting. This is in the old wiki [2] but was eventually culled as uncited (and also in the current, cited to the obits). Softlavender (talk) 13:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Or even this one [3] which says "born ... in Boaler Street, Kensington, Liverpool"Nigej (talk) 15:50, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Go for Liverpool, I say, and see what complaints you get. Many of the sources people thinks are WP:RS actually just copy the stuff from somewhere else, lazy journalist often. Nigej (talk) 15:44, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, Wikipedia policy requires us to add what is verifiable, not necessarily what we suspect to be true? This source says he was born in Liverpool, but it doesn't look very reliable does it? Martinevans123 (talk) 19:28, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Anyway it's clear that Leigh is doubtful at best, and as such should be removed. Nigej (talk) 22:43, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I agree it's doubtful to the three of us discussing it here, but not to the vast majority of reliable sources? Martinevans123 (talk) 22:53, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Actually, the vast majority of reliable sources say Liverpool. If no one else wants to fix it, I will. Softlavender (talk) 23:48, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Really? Have they changed overnight? But, as long as there is one WP:RS supporting Liverpool, I don't see a problem. I guess we can "ignore" the others (kind of). Martinevans123 (talk) 23:55, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Please re-read the RSs that have already been posted in this thread: [4]; and [5] (that link is four or five RSs). And here is a new one: [6]. None of the obits are RSs because they're just copying IMDB (which has been inaccurate since prior to 2004) or Wikipedia (which has been inaccurate since December 2013, but was accurate before that). Softlavender (talk) 00:10, 5 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Anyway, I'm working up a draft on a userpage so it will be bulletproof before I post it. Softlavender (talk) 00:42, 5 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Done. Thanks very very much, Nigej, for bringing this to our attention. Softlavender (talk) 01:27, 5 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Now it says "Liverpool" in the text but "Leigh" in the info box... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.208.121.132 (talk) 23:32, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Article needs a lot of TLC edit

The article is very skimpy and doesn't even begin to capture all of Welland's work and talents. Needs to be bumped up a lot. Softlavender (talk) 13:15, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

At least he's escaped Main Page ITN, eh? Martinevans123 (talk) 13:25, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Birth place of Colin Welland edit

There have been plenty discussions as to whether Colin Welland was born either in Liverpool or Leigh. I can confirm that he was actually born in Milton Street, Leigh, before his parents moved to the Kensington area of Liverpool when he was an infant. He later returned to Leigh as a teacher.HarveyLeighBlear (talk) 19:55, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Harvey BlearReply

Unfortunately, your personal "confirmation" needs to supported by one or more reliable sources, published in the public domain. Without such sources, it's worthless. Please provide any that you have. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:11, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't know where you sourced the information that Colin Welland was born in Liverpool. He was actually born in Milton Street, Leigh, before moving to the Kensington area of Liverpool in 1939. I have tried editing the Colin Welland page but it keeps being removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HarveyLeighBlear (talkcontribs) 15:57, 10 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
