Need to obtain correct grid reference and postal town.

Merging edit

Considering the historical and paranormal importance of the ruins I think that it would be inappropriate to merge the contents of this article with the main Clophill article.

A6 Murder edit

The A6 murder has nothing to do with Clophill. It happened to occur about a mile away on a trunk road. It has no place in an encyclopedic entry for the village and should be removed. User:Polly Math 14:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. Moved to Maulden, the civil parish where the murder occurred. Skinsmoke (talk) 14:51, 2 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Flying Horse edit

Although there is a link to Dick Turpin that page doesn't mention the flying horse so it is probably a myth and should be removed. User:Polly Math 14:59, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Deleted section edit

The disapperance of a young girl Charlotte Deans who practised voodoo and black magic was found hanging in the tower of the dark and dingy church by her best friend Kim Hart who later committed suicide because she was so traumitised.

Was deleted on the basis as being unsubstantiated, however normally things shouldnt be deleted just because there is not any substantiation.GazMan7 13:41, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have lived near the church refered to for over 30 years and have never heard of this. I have searched the web and can find no reference to it. Looks like it was made up. Who wrote it? 195.194.74.189 This person has been replacing pages with the word 'crap' so I am not upset about deleting it. User:Polly Math 17:59, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I undertook a bit of googling and found that Charlotte Deans is the name of a young girl in the area. The google results page led me to her Myspace profile on which her linked friends were referencing the Clophill Church page. I therefore suspect that it was a hoax or an act of spite. Old Church edit

Much of what is written about the old St Mary's church elsewhere is simply wrong or cannot be substantiated.

These include the following claims:

  • that it is orientated incorrectly or "satanically"
  • that it was founded on the site of a leper colony
  • that villagers were abandoned there to die during the Black Death
  • that ghost sightings there have been authenticated
  • that there have been suicides at or linked to the ruin

The facts remain that

  • for several centuries this was a much loved place of worship for Clophill villagers
  • the new church was built because villagers couldn't bear the idea of demolishing the old one to make it larger
  • the old church remained in active use until 1957 and was abandoned because of the theft of the roof lead
  • it remains a much loved, and cared for, part of Clophill village

Introductory section edit

There are two points in this section that need attention. "At this time" does not refer to any specific time that I can see.

The third paragraph referring to census populations does not make sense. --Oldontarian (talk) 11:39, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
