In this article's introductory paragraph, the following sentence appears:
" Alternatively, clonal hematopoiesis may arise without a driving mutation, through mechanisms such as neutral drift in the stem cell population."
Not understanding the meaning of "neutral drift", I read about genetic drift, and it appears that the sentence will be more readable if the word "drift" is linked to the WP article Genetic drift. Clonal hematopoiesis
The bone marrow where mutations are believed to occur
CHIP or clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential is a medical condition in the human bone marrow which is characterized by a "bizarre accumulation of mutated stem cells" which may lead to an increased risk of heart attacks or strokes.[1][2][3][4][5] According to a report in the New York Times, the mutation is not based on predisposed genetic factors, but it is acquired over time, so that as a person ages, he or she is more likely to have this condition.[1] The condition brings a 50%+ chance of dying of a heart attack or stroke within the next ten years of a person's life.[1] According to one view, it is the most important discovery since statins.[4] Some doctors have advised against getting the expensive[6] test for CHIP since there are no treatments available to stop or reverse the accumulation of mutated STEM cells.[5]
