Was Clausentum actually located in Bitterne? edit
Bitterne proper is a the top of Lances Hill.
Clausentum was on the edge of the Itchen at the bottom of the hill near Northam Bridge. Thus, wasn't it located in what is now Bitterne Park not Bitterne? It doesn't help that Bitterne Railway Station isn't located in Bitterne either.

- Much depends on where you draw the boundaries. We have a separate article on Bitterne Manor, which is where Calusentum is believed to have been located. The only officially defined entity named Bitterne is Bitterne Ward - but even the modern-day Bitterne shopping precinct isn't inside the Bitterne Ward boundaries, it's in Harefield ward!
- However the original settlement to be called Bitterne was at Bitterne Manor, built upon the foundations of Clausentum and the name of Bitterne used currently in the city stems from there. One could argue that the location of Clausentum, close to the Northam Bridge, is the definitive Bitterne. The housing estate that surrounds St Mary's college was originally called Bitterne Grove and the shopping precinct area would arguably be more correctly referred to as Chessel, since that's the name of the country house that was originally sited near there and which the "Bitterne Village" settlement grew around.
- As far as Wikipedia is concerned, we have to use reliable sources, not subjective assertions from local people about what they do and don't think belongs to an area. If we accept that the Bitterne shopping precinct is within Bitterne, then clearly we're not sticking strictly to the ward boundaries, in which case we're talking about "historical Bitterne" which must include Bitterne Manor, with of course the station also being included since it is located between the two.
