The chullo not is original from Chile, is original from Peru and part of Bolivia. This version is mistake.
The spanish version is
El chullo (aimara: ch'ullu ) es un gorro con orejeras tejido en lana de alpaca u otros animales y en combinación con fibras sintéticas. Es originario de las regiones andinas, donde se le usa para protegerse del inclemente frío de la puna. Suele acompañarse de dibujos multicolores. ……………In the Andes mountains of Bolivia and Peru, knitted hats of chullo are made from vicuña, alpaca o llama, or sheeps wool. Both men and women wear these hats with intricately patterned bands depicting animals and birds in dyed and naturally colored yarns. Men also knit hats and belts that record their marital and social status Knitting in Mexico and Guatemala ranges from fine altar cloths to tough, hard-wearing carrying bags. Important knitting traditions also include finely knit aloe fiber stockings and shawls from Paraguay and the Azores.
Hand knitting has experienced a resurgence in recent years with the advent of interesting new fibers and yarns, especially among young adults. The Knitting Guild of America offers conventions, conferences, design contests, and a monthly magazine. Events such a Knit-ins” bring people from all walks of life to a central place to share their craft and raise funds for charity. In developing contries, knitting is an important technique used to create goods for export, similar to Bosnian crochet. For example, refugees from Afghanistan knit their own designs using wool unraveled from garments given to them by ald organizations. In India, discarded saris are shredded, and the silk is spun into knitting yarn.

The four-cornered hat referred to is not the Spanish birette but the Ancient Peruvian Huari or Wari hat. I would suggest editing the text about the Peruvian historian to the following
A Peruvian historian, Arturo Jimenez Borja, in his book “Indumentaria Tradicional Andina” [Traditional Andean Clothing], says that there is archeological evidence which shows that headwear in the Basque country of Spain was shaped more like the chullo than that of pre-colonial Peru, where the four-pointed Wari or Huari (associated with two ancient cultures of the Andes: the Wari and the Tiwanaku) was the hat of choice.
