Maruthanayagam pillai is not a Chozhia Vellalar. He is a Illathu pillaimar Caste. And he converted to Muslim. So Please Refer that.

Thanks.

Regarding the 'OBC' term edit

@Dr.Pinsky, I feel its a bit illogical to add the OBC status right at the top, Caste groups here tend to do rounds on wikipedia and this was probably the work of one such IP contributor.

The consensus for caste community pages appear to be not using the government's legal classifications, as that might often not appear to be accurate, and such classifications are often changed on the state's discretion and they do not mind doing so for political agenda, which is why almost all such pages do not generally highlight the caste classification. The same was true for this page, until the aforementioned user appears to have changed it recently.

They appear to be fixated on changing caste names/identities to government classifications, They had made one previous edit which also seems to be related to caste, where they changed the word 'Devendrakula' to 'SC', This being ludicrous as 'SC' applies for huge basket of oppressed communities and not just the single mentioned caste, I suspect they identify with recent caste chauvinist movements, movements which often tend to target communities including the one this article's about, I am not implying they made these edits in bad faith, However, I fail to see the good in them, it almost feels like they want legal classifications as some new way of social hierarchy, and they want Wikipedia to be a tool in doing so.

I recommend reverting, and adding a note about legal caste classification in the overview in a seperate line, As while legal classifications might appear important to some, ground realities never reflect such classifications in this issue. I hope my point is clear, you are free to present your view if you have some insight. -- KindCowboy69 15:00, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@KindCowboy69: I partially agree with you on the mess, but I disagree with your statement that ”The consensus for caste community pages appear to be not using the government's legal classifications, which is why almost all such pages do not generally highlight the caste classification”. And lets not bring whataboutism ”I suspect they identify with recent caste chauvinist movements, movements which often tend to target communities including the one this article's about” to the discussion and focus on Chozhia Vellalar only. Further , I must confess that , I am not planning to get myself too involved in this. Going forward, I have restored the last stable version and mentioned their OBC status with proper attribution. Relevance of a Sri Lankan Vellalars subsection edit

Good morning, I post this message to question the need for a section dedicated to Sri Lankan Vellalars, when there is no link between the two communities, at least from an academic point of view.

This section does not contain newsworthy information (nothing in fact) about the Chozhia Vellalars and appears to be there only to serve the academically well-known tendency of a part of Sri Lankan Jaffna Vellalars community to assert their caste narratives. In an effort to legitimize their caste title, membership and origins, which were the subject of self-serving rewritings and narratives during the colonial period in Ceylon (Arumuga Navalar and its subsequent Sanskritization movement among Jaffna's elites, known also as Hindu Revivalism). This community narrative is based notably on a supposed pure South Indian origin, coming from great lineages and eminent regions of South India. This serves to emphasize a supposed innate superiority of this community over other Sri Lankan Tamil-speaking populations.

In addition, many other articles directly or indirectly related to this community and its region present similar problems (the unquestionning of communities-interested narratives insinuated as academically recognised facts).

A section dedicated to Ceylon in an article dealing specifically with the Chozhia Vellalars community, should only inform about the possible Chozhia Vellalar communities settled in Ceylon, especially during the British Raj. A possibility of mentioning the Sri Lankan Vellalars would be interesting only in the event that these communities would indeed descend from the Chozhias Vellalars. Except that this is not attested from a historical point of view.

The Sri Lankan Vellalars community is already the subject of an article on Wikipedia, where it is already indicated that this community could have ancient roots from the Malabar and Coromandel coasts.

I therefore request the deletion of this subsection, which curiously is not present on the articles of the other Vellalar communities, despite the fact that the latter may just as well be possibly linked to the Sri Lankan Vellalars.

P.S : Distant origins from the Coromandel and Malabar coasts at a distant time is something, Insinuating a link with a community (Chozhia Vellalars) whose period of appearance or process of formation are not known is another. Drusekoana (talk) 12:26, 11 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
