Talk:Chorleywood

Latest comment: 4 years ago by Deipnosophista in topic name

Last year I edited the text in order to show that the population growth occurred in the early part of the 20th Century. The article has been recently improved, but I do feel that the article now misleadingly implies that there has been recent population growth in Chorleywood. There has hardly been any population growth in Chorleywood (at least no new greenfield developments) since the 50's. I feel this should be reflected in the article.

name edit

Whatever the parish history says, it cannot be the case that the "Chorley" in "Chorleywood" is derived both from 'cerola', meaning a meadow or a clearing, and also from 'cherle' meaning churl or peasant. I have redrafted to introduce more doubt, and settled on the authority of the Oxford Place-Names Dictionary. Deipnosophista (talk) 18:10, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
