Race track

The exact date for the racetrack is September 10th, 2006. I know for a fact that the Casino will have a 5-star resturant. I also know a few other things (a hotel might be in the works), but I'm not going into detail. I'll make more edits later possibly. --Noxilerm 16:52, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Opening paragraph

Notable residents

"Horace Walker Chester High and N.B.A star" appears to be factual (google), but was not added in a proper section. However, one problem in adding notable persons is avoiding undue emphasis for people in the popular media. Chester's list has several entries listed which are essentially notable for just a brief period of time. Tedickey (talk) 11:55, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

There is a standard for what people you include in a "Notable people section". The standard is, "Do they qualify for a Wikipedia biography under any of the policies at WP:BIO?". Horace Walker would qualify if he actually played in the NBA. John from Idegon (talk) 16:10, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

newer picture needed of bridge

Suggestions for Improvement

The picture of the Commodore Barry Bridge should be larger and it should be directly over the Transportation section, and there should be pictures of Chester's current and former train stations. The PPL Park picture should be larger and it should be directly over the "Sports" template as well, right above "Union, Soccer". A more recent picture of the Avenue of the States should be used, as well as pictures that more accurately balance out the real economic picture in Chester. Why are there no pictures of the Waterfront or the "Wharf at Rivertown" or the racino? There should also be pictures of and a section for Widener University. Under sports, there should be mention of the Widener University teams as well as the Chester High teams, especially basketball. There should also be mention of the annual Chester vs Philadelphia basketball game. There should be mention of and pictures of Lloyd Field and Chester's baseball and other sporting history. There should be a section for the multitude of parks in Chester, including Chester Park and Deshong Park, especially of the museum and art collection. oldchesterpa in particular has great old pictures of many of these parks. It would also be a great source for pictures for the history, economy, and transportation sections. There should be a section for the neighborhoods of Chester as well as pictures of them and a description of each. Getting back to history, there should be a mention of the multitude of movie theaters that used to exist in Chester as well as the Ford plant there (where Lee Iococa used to work) the Baldwin plant, the creation of the modern ship anchor, and other important parts of Chester's history and economy. There should be mention of and pictures of the economic development in the city, the recently built University Crossings, the redeveloped housing projects, and there definitely needs to be a section specifically for Chester's downtown, which city-data, phillyskyline, and skyscrapercity has a good selection of pictures of. As far as the missing photos - I added 3 last month, taken then, including the downtown pix. Wikipedia is edited by volunteers, so there is a great method to provide missing pix - take them yourself! Not that I don't appreciate your suggestions, but I may have different priorities.

This is a great message for all of your suggestions - feel free to WP:So fix it yourself.

One caveat about doing it yourself. Please make sure you don't have a WP:COI. I'm particularly concerned about a couple of possible biases for this article. Some folks seem to like to put down Chester. Chesterites definitely have to deal with lots of challenges, but I don't see any point in making it worse than it actually is. Another possible bias comes from the casino/racetrack. I'd hate to see the riverfront "industries" dominate the article or try to whitewash it.

New Photos

I ride past Chester regularly on the train, and it's a sad sight. The picture of the bridge seems only tangentially relevant...it doesn't even show the city itself, so I moved it down to the transportation section. I think it is more appropriate to include pictures that capture the essence of this city. I uploaded a picture I took and set it as the main pic--it's taken from the downtown and is typical of the scenery in the downtown. I think it more accurately depicts Chester and its economic ruin: pretty, old buildings, all boarded up.

There's another point here, besides bias and accuracy of an encyclopedic article, that I raised on my blog recently: [1]. There's a complacency in not displaying unsightly aspects of Chester, or of any area for that matter. Real people live here and are in this downtown area every day. They deserve for people to see the reality of what their city looks like. Maybe if more people saw, someone might be moved to do something about it. I think it's important to photograph both prosperous and poor areas of a city; many articles seem to violate WP:UNDUE because they display only attractive photos of "nice" areas, and this does not reflect what most people see on a daily basis. I've driven around Chester as well...try exploring it on google street view to verify. There are some nice residential streets but the commercial center of the town is almost completely boarded up, and there are numerous areas of it that are mostly vacant lots as well, and also lots of boarded-up buildings on residential streets. I used the Avenue of the States image for the main image and moved the "Boarded up buildings" image to the Economy section, where it is more appropriate. I must concur with Tedickey that using the latter image to represent the city smacks of POV-pushing - but I certainly think that image has a place in the article. The problem is that you seem to think that just because you ride by it on the train that somehow you know the city. I have to agree with the others. You see a very tiny part of the city and you see it going by in a train, not walking around. In my opinion, Chester doesn't have a large enough article nor a detailed enough one. Crime

I cited the Crime section which was recently added in. The Minaret Temple shooting made notable headlines; however I believe the State of Emergency declared in 2010 due to the rash of homicides should also be mentioned. I'll probably get to it one day, just have to get the sources all together and whatnot. A recent edit restored an edit which was part of a dubious (contrary to sources) changes, saying "Ethel Water correct format, honors please don't change". However the cite for New York Drama Critics award appears to be factual; some justification for the change might be useful TEDickey (talk) 08:24, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Notable residents

This section needs some trimming. I don't believe there is a rule that says everybody who has a Wikipedia article and who ever lived in the city needs to be included in the section. In fact, Wikipedia:Famous Residents, an essay, says that the significance of the person should be related to the city. In any case I've deleted the 2 porn stars, who seem to have no significant ties to the city, and I'll likely delete others who are equally unknown outside of narrow areas and don't have obvious ties to the city. @Smallbones: As you said, the essay you quoted is just that, an essay. It is not policy or a guideline. The applicable guideline, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline, makes no statement as to what level of fame a person should have in order to be in a notable list (other than notability obviously). WP:NLIST says very simply, they must be notable per WP:BIO. Porn stars make that criteria. It is a slippery slope we climb when we start making decisions about whether something is "enough" within a guideline. These people's bio's say they are from Chester. You are not disputing that. There is no reason they shouldn't be in the list. They are obviously not important in your world, and they are not in mine either. But the objective criterium we are working under do not give an out. Failing some factual reason why they shouldn't be here, they should be. There isn't a policy argument that I am aware of for removing them. John from Idegon (talk) 05:49, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Additionaly, the procedure for dealing with sections that have become too large is not to delete some of the contents but to fork it off into another article, in this case List of notable people from Chester, Pennsylvania. Notable residents, Deron Miller isn't from Chester

His bio lists "Deron was born in Chester, Pennsylvania and spent his childhood in Marlton, New Jersey.[citation needed]" and the ref listed confirms West Chester (about 25 miles away). Of course he might be listed on several of these lists, but I certainly wouldn't object to anyone removing him from this list. BTW is he really well-known for anything?

It seems to be a common thing among the pages of CKY members. Bam Margera was listed under "People from Philadelphia" until I removed him. Come to think of it, so was Asher Roth.
