NMH

Neutral Milk Hotel was one of the biggest indie bands of the 90s. Cher Doll put out their first record, which sells for hundreds of dollars on Ebay. That's notable.

NMH is definately a notable band, however it may not be enough to establish notability for the record label.-SilverOrion ^{(You talk way too much!)}

I don't know how to convince you of its notability; it's instantly familiar with anyone involved in the indiepop universe. There isn't much online because stuff didn't happen online then; it happened in zines and the like. It's not notable in the sense that Capitol Records is, but it's a key part of a long-lived scene; it seems to me like the perfect thing to be recorded in Wikipedia; people want to know this stuff. 216.64.147.98 (talk) 03:38, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Dates of Record Label

I found this link http://www.twee.net/bands/c/crayon.html which says "1992 "This Dream Is Gone"-split 7" w/ Veronica Lake (Cher Doll)" but that conflicts with the dates for Cher Doll in the article. Wassup? Also, did the record label close up shop and if so when? What was their last release? ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:21, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

It would be great to find sources that answer these types of questions. I love the whole DIY concept of indys and this in one of those articles that would be interesting because of many reasons - a small indy, a female run business, vinyl in a CD age, being a small indy in the MTV age, a fanzine and on and on. Well, I added "In 1992 Cher Doll released Crayon's Veronica Lake split 7-inch record. Cher Doll also released the band's 1994 Phantom Third Channel split 7-inch EP." I can't really tell if this is already included in the discography or not. And the 1992 date challenges the Intros timeline, but that's what Crayon's article says and an external source. A source is imnottalwayssostupid blog, which would seem to be that of Nancy Ostrander. I have been reticent to use it as a ref as it doesn't explicitly say it is hers. What do others think on this? I've emailed the address given. It has a page on the releases[1] with the info:

I think that should read "the late 90s". The last records listed are in 1998, but there are four underneath with no date. It says release dates are approximate. Veronica Lake is given as January 1993. Ty 08:24, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Well two sources give 1992 as the date for the Crayon/ Veronica Lake split 7" release. I also found an Autocollants song from their Something Cool CD track 3 - "Cher Doll Records (Cher 009) Apple Vines" on a compilation record. "California's Autocollants compiled their greatest "hits" in 1999, after having disbanded a few years earlier. The indie pop quartet had flourished in the southern California pop scene in 1996 and 1997 and began Shelflife Records along the way. With releases on labels such as Rover Records, Tinseltone, Drive-In, Cher Doll, and Shelflife, the band had many blissful pop gems to chose from while compiling this disc. Most of the tracks are relaxed, dreamy indie pop, with Laura Watling's vocals leading the way. Guitar, bass, drums, synthesizers, trumpets, tambourine, and keyboards also find their way onto the 13-track disc. "Candy Coated Kisses," "Four and a Half," and "Apple Vines" are definite highlights, incorporating lively pop tones and summery instrumentation. The lyrics are often bittersweet commentaries on simple themes. The disc includes a sample of previously released material, as well as three new tracks: "We Can't Have it All," "Another Thursday," and "Beyond the Reef." "Trio" was re-recorded especially for Why Couldn't Things Just Stay the Same?. Ed Mazzucco and Tim Morris perform most of the guitar work, while Dwayne Palasek adds subtle drums throughout. Jon Chaikin guests on guitar on three tracks."

I've heard back from her. Part of the email says, "there are a few things on the entry (such as the quote about "Bucket" by Neutral Milk Hotel being a Cher Doll 7") that are pretty obviously untrue ... Unfortunately the most reliable source about the label appears to be me (even the 33 1/3 book about Neutral Milk Hotel gets some dates wrong)." I've emailed back with suggestions.
