Importance edit

Possibly if Bass was the "first African-American woman to run for national office" her importance is then greater than low, though it's certainly hard to judge on the basis of a stub. Шизомби 18:34, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Birth Information edit

The birthdate of 1874 does not appear to be correct. According to the 1900 US Census, her birthdate is listed as October 1880. In the 1880 Census (conducted in June 1880), she is listed as one year old, which suggests a birthyear of 1879 or 1880. In the latter census, a brother is listed as six years old, unless she was a twin, it seems very unlikely that she was born in 1874. Igbo (talk) 18:24, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Founded Progressive Party edit

This is incorrect and should be changed to "joined" the Progressive Party, which was founded by Henry A. Wallace. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Party_1948_%28United_States%29#Foundation — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doobie61 (talkcontribs) 18:32, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

CNN article edit

I saw this today, but I do not have the time currently to weave it into the article. There may be others forthcoming in the wake of Biden's choice of Kamala Harris as his running mate.

Some unclarity on early life details, education, even birthplace edit

The NYTimes today had an article about Bass, stating she attended Pembroke College in Brown University after moving to Providence.[1] The Wikipedia article linked Pembroke to University of North Carolina at Pembroke, citing Streitmatter's book, but that source only says "Charlotta attended Pemboke College for one semester", it doesn't specify which Pembroke[2]. There is very little written about her early life, even her memoir "Forty Years: Memoirs from the Pages of a Newspaper" says nothing about Pembroke or Providence. I have to assume the UNC link is an error, so I changed it to Pembroke College (the Women's College of Brown University).

While doing research, I found a brief entry for her at the Online Archive of California[3], which holds her papers and should be reliable. That link not only explicitly states she attended Brown, but also Columbia and UCLA. Further, it says she was born in Little Compton, Rhode Island. The Little Compton birthplace claim is not supported by any other source I could find, so I added that as a note.[3] But it makes a certain sense that, if she was born in Rhode Island, her brother might be in Providence, and she would take classes at Brown's Pembroke College.

In the 1930 United States Census for Los Angeles, she lists her birthplace as Rhode Island (and her age as only 40!). -Kzirkel (talk) 19:12, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ah, found this brief article in the Boston Globe, 31 August 1952: "Born in Little Compton, R.I., now of New York City ... she has taken courses at Brown University, Columbia University, and University of California at Los Angeles"[4] - Kzirkel (talk) 20:31, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
