Discrepancies - dates, discovery edit

Two discrepancies pop up for me:

  • the site was abandoned in 1543 per the article and supported by both Parks Canada references, but the article in French says it was abandoned in June 1542.
  • the site was declared a National Historic Site of Canada in 1923, but its discovery was announced in 2006 (per the article in English and in French)?

Can anyone help clarify? --papageno (talk) 02:49, 11 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

According to this master's thesis (p.4) , it was "known" (albeit unproven) since at least 1840 that Jacques Cartier had Fort Charlesbourg-Royal built, probably in the vicinity of the mouth of the Cap-Rouge river (which I guess is why the canadian governement decided to make it a National Historic Site). There had been a couple of archeological work in the 20th century but they remained unconclusive (p. 97). It was only in 2004-2006 that archeological findings proven that the site was occupied by French people in the 16th century, so they deducted that it could only have been Charlesbourg-Royal (p.98). Oddly, this thesis both refer as Charlesbourg Royal (1541-1542) and Charlesbourg Royal (1541-1543), but the former is only used 2 times and only in citations (incl. of the governement of Quebec..), while the author use herself 7 times the year 1543 - so I think the latter is a safer choice --Nonztp (talk) 14:28, 11 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
