Problems with Article edit

This article assumes that Chanco/Chauco is the same Indian who warned Richard Pace of the 1622 attack. This is not necessarily the case, as original accounts of the event do not mention the name of the Indian who warned Pace. Also, Chanco was too old to have been the boy who lived with the Paces. For more discussion on this debate, see The story of the Indian attack on Jamestown and how "Chanco" purportedly saved the colony.

The article also begins with a mention of Jamestown being part of the Royal Colony of Virginia. This was not true at the time of the 1622 attack, as it did not become a Royal Colony until 1624 with the liquidation of the Virginia Company of London. Prior to this, the colony was literally a business venture and not yet under direct control of the Crown. Glen Mark Martin (talk) 22:44, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rewritten edit

Since it now seems doubtful that the Indian who warned Richard Pace was really called "Chanco", a page under this name is perhaps not the most suitable place for an account of the warning and its consequences. Seeing no straightforward way to change the emphasis through corrections, I've taken the liberty of rewriting the page, explaining how the name came to be attached to the Indian who warned Pace. I've included a pointer to the Richard Pace (Jamestown) page for information about the historical events. Underdoor (talk) 12:43, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
