Image for page edit

We need an image that would be fitting for Cat lover culture. Can anyone help? Thanks. Karl Twist (talk) 14:05, 9 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cat lover cultureCat culture – I think this article still suffers from some of the issues raised in last year's AfD. We might start with the title. Per WP:NDESC, we're allowed to make up descriptive titles, but this one is barely attested outside Wikipedia and its mirrors, so why not go with the more concise version that's actually used in the body of the article, and at least some of its references? We might also consider usurping Cat fancy, which currently redirects to Animal fancy. Restructing this article thus could help address some of those issues. "Cat culture" might draw the objection that it implies animal culture in the context of cats, but there doesn't seem to be much on that, and the phrase already redirects here. --BDD (talk) 16:00, 25 March 2020 (UTC) Relisting. Anarchyte (talk | work) 12:23, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Cat cultureCat fancy – Per WP:COMMONNAME [1], and WP:PRECISE ("cat culture" implies animal culture of cats, which is potentially an actual encyclopedia article subject judging from some of the documentaries I've seen), and perhaps also WP:RECOGNIZABLE, since "cat culture" doesn't seem to be a term in broad use in the first place.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  23:08, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment Never heard of the term cat fancy. I feel like something along the lines of cat lovers is more familiar to people. Killuminator (talk) 00:10, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Only now noticed the requested move from 2020. I feel like it was a mistake and there were only 2 supporters. I'll tag them for input. @Red Slash @Ortizesp Killuminator (talk) 00:27, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
    See WP:IDONTKNOWIT. What you're personally familiar with isn't relevant.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  18:21, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Preen all you like but the usage of this term in the text itself, let alone cited sources, is terrible. Killuminator (talk) 02:34, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose, BUT move back to Cat lover culture for reasons mentioned above. "Cat culture" DOES seem like we're talking about animal culture (which is a separate topic that's unrelated to this article's topic), but "cat fancy" seems more obscure (and harder to parse than "Cat lover culture" if you're unfamiliar with the term "Cat fancy" in advance). • I'll join this and oppose the proposed move and counter-propose moving it back to cat lover culture. Killuminator (talk) 15:30, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
"Cat lover culture" is even more problematic than "cat culture" from a WP:COMMONNAME and thus WP:RECOGNIZABLE analysis, since it's generally even less attested in source material; it appears to be a phrase made up by a Wikipedian, and it is so rare it does not rate in ngrams at all [2].  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  18:20, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
We can eject culture and still have cat lover, an instantly recognizable term. Killuminator (talk) 19:13, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
No, we can't, since that title would identify a class of person, and this article is not about that.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  20:38, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
It's about cat lovers, a rose by any other name. Killuminator (talk) 02:32, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom, COMMONNAME. "Cat fancy" is the normal and correct term used. Happy editing, SilverTiger12 (talk) 15:08, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nomination. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:11, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. SMcCandlish seems correct. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 05:13, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Needs a "History" section edit

We need to cover the early historical material (prominent position of cats in ancient Egypt, etc.), briefly, perhaps some on the giving of cats at royal gifts in the medieval era, then get into the origins of the modern cat fancy, with the first cat shows organized at Crystal Palace, the first books on cat breeding, the establishment of Cat Fanciers' Association and GCCF, then later other organizations. Should probably also cover cat-devoted magazines like Cat Fancy and Catster and their supplanting by websites.

PS: Some of the material that is presently in the article may be too trivial in vein of random pop-culture references for us to retain it. E.g., short-term housing of two cats in an apartment rented for them in California is probably not encyclopedic information.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:29, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Adding the word ailurophile edit

The word ailurophile means a cat lover, or cat fancier. I think this word and its definition would fit this article, but I don't know how...
