Cars (disambiguation)Cars – Another editor recently redirected Cars here. I reverted that since the same edit has previously been reverted in similar circumstances, and because it would violate WP:MALPLACED, but I am wondering whether the existence of the Cars film franchise justifies treating Cars differently than Car (both now redirect to Automobile. I am neutral on the question, but I think that the consensus of the community should be gauged. bd2412 T 19:49, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Leave as is - cars should go straightforwardly to car, the thing with four wheels and an engine. The Disney franchise is peripheral and trivial compared to the central role of the car in modern human existence. In ictu oculi (talk) 01:09, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
"Leave as is" would be Cars → Automobile, which is probably what you meant. Car is itself a redirect to Automobile and cannot be the receiver of another redirect. SpinningSpark 08:30, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose cars should repoint to automobile as car points there. Just add an additional hatnote for cars (disambiguation) -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 05:46, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose, Cars should redirect to Automobile per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. SpinningSpark 15:11, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose, The primary meaning of Cars is not a Disney franchise (I actually think automobile should redirect to cars - but suspect that argument has been lost already :-) - Arjayay (talk) 15:23, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Support – I was the one who made the reverted redirect – sorry about the hassle! Anyway, I wasn't thinking of the Disney films; my reasoning was that someone who types "cars" into our search field (as I did) is more likely looking for something called "Cars" or "The Cars (band)" (as I was), or "CARS" than "Automobile". And not wanting Carson City or Carsten Ball or any of the other things on the proposed list, I sort of expected to be taken to "Cars (disambiguation)" when I pressed enter. Instead I got "Automobile" and was ever so mildly annoyed, especially as "Car (disambiguation)" didn't get me to my destination either. I realize the redirect was a bit precipitate, and I suppose I could have typed "the cars" instead, but I still think I had the right idea. Compare Hats (though I admit hats no longer have the central role they once had in human existence...). Alternatively, why not combine the singular and plural disambiguation pages, as with "Stone" and "Stones"?--Rallette (talk) 07:22, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
    • It is Wikipedia convention to use the singular form. This is not necessarily the case in the real world, where the plural form is frequently used to indicate the group or class. That does not mean that the plural form is lacking a primary topic, since the world at large uses the plural form to indicate the same thing that Wikipedia uses the singular form for. -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 04:49, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Car is the most common term in the English language – Even the majority of utterances on American TV is for car and not automobile. Outside of the US, the overwhelming term is car. In a democratic world, a view cannot be hijacked by a small minority living in the past. Automobile is rapidly becoming an archaic term. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.208.31.187 (talk) 12:36, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
