"After the battle, the 5th Foot took the white plumes worn by the French soldiers and wore them as battle trophies. Subsequently, the plumes became part of the uniform for the regiment."

Although there is evidence of the 5th Regiment wearing white feathers as hat ornaments as early as 1791 (along with several other infantry regiments of the day), the origin in battle cannot be dated earlier than 1800 and the earliest reference to St Lucia dates from 1823. This is undermined somewhat by the fact that in 1778 it seems French soldiers did not wear plumes in their hats. Therefore it is best to class the episode as tradition rather than fact.
