According to a note on the record, the song was chosen as the official anthem for "World Contact Day" with alien worlds should it happen in the future.
Chosen by whom? Who are these "officials"? This claim is sounding more and more ridiculous as time passes - imagine aliens landing in the year 4923, only to be played a recording from the 1970s! Even if they landed tomorrow this would be embarrassing, to say the least! If aliens ever do land, it won't be like a hollywood movie, and there probably won't be a bunch of hippies playing songs at them. So I ask again, who are these self-appointed offficials who "chose" this as the "anthem" of their silly concept? Graham 05:15, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

You're making the concept sound ridiculous and unthinkable. I guess I heard Richard Carpenter calling it "The Recognized Anthem of World Contact Day", but I think it's cool that they would play an old 1970s song if something did happen. Karen Carpenter's Biggest Fan 18:50, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

What Persuaded the Carpenters to Record this Song?
