Talk:Calcium fluoride

Is the safety data accidentally taken from the HF page? CaF2 has oral LD50 ~2000 mg/kg - ie essentially nontoxic.

Crystal structure is wrong edit

Both the diagram and the description of CaF2's crystal structure are incorrect. This is true simply as a matter of fact, but you can see for yourself just looking at the picture: the unit cell shown contains 4 calcium and 4 fluorine atoms. How can the ratio of Ca to F in calcium difluoride be unity?

The correct fluorite structure has alternating cubic cells--half of them are BCC with a Ca2+ ion in the middle; half of them are simple cubic (i.e. lacking Ca2+ ions altogether). When you put eight of these cubes together, you get the correct CaF2 unit cell. -134.84.102.192 (talk) 21:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

The unit cell shown contains 4 Ca and 8 F.

page needs org work edit

Need to look at both this page and fluorite and decide what belongs where. Some duplication may make sense. But having a better structure discussion in the mineral and a better usage section in the chemical, makes little sense. Also, just within this article, the lead needs to be rewritten to cover the whole topic. As of now it is really just a section on the chemical structure. Just noting the need...TCO (talk) 18:50, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
