Talk:Cahir

I found this comment on the Main Page: "Please check translation of Cathair Dun Iascaigh.. I grew up there and was always told it meant 'Town of the fishing fort'" Peter Clarke 09:18, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

You are totally right! "Iascaigh" is a genitive of "iascach" (act of fishing), so "fish" alone is clearly a silly translation. I did the corresponding change, as well as added shéimhiú on "Dún" as it should be. I have it on my aural comprehension test (accompanying textbook Teanga Bheo for Junior Cert) and you can hear it clearly "dhún" there. 78.60.54.188 (talk)

Terrible Article edit

I agree with all of the comments below, and c'mon "well appointed" pharmacies?! --Lorcan Blake (talk) 21:26, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Twinning edit

Where in Ghana is Cahir twinned with? It's hardly the whole country. SeamusSweeney (talk) 07:04, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

This is a bad article edit

Cahir has restaurants to "suit every palate"? That might be true, but that type of language construction is inappropriate for a wikipedia article. This page reads in part like a clichéd tourist selling point: the "efficient" tourist office and the "well appointed" pharmacies (whatever that's supposed to mean) are just two examples of the amateurish, parochial way in which this article has been written. Frankly, it makes Cahir sound desperate – desperate for custom. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Asteroid (talkcontribs) 19:32, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, bits of this article are very ropey. I don't know the town well enough to edit this properly, but lines like:

"Cahir also has some interesting, if not beautiful, landscape features." - what on Earth does that mean? Surely that could simply be "Cahir has some interesting landscape features".

"There are numerous professional practices in the town including two well-appointed pharmacies in the central square and a highly efficient tourist office is centrally located in the town, which opens during high summer.[citation needed] There are numerous restaurants, which provide a range of foods to satisfy every palate,[citation needed] ranging from fast-food to gourmet cuisine, and several traditional Irish pubs. Cahir has a Gaelic Football pitch and a soccer pitch. An 18-hole golf course is situated on the outskirts of the town."

This is ridiclous. Written like a tourist brochure (and a very poor one). "There are numerous professional practises" - as far as I know, there are some, but NOT numerous. "Well appointed" pharmacies? I've never heard a pharmacy described as "well appointed" before. It makes no sense. "Highly efficient tourist office" - again, where is the evidence of this great efficiency and how is it being measured? "Numerous restraunts" - again, completely over the top. Cahir has a few fast-food outlets. "To satisfy every palate" - sounds ridiculously opinionated. Where is the evidence? Has a survey been carried out to verify that tourists enjoy the food. "Gourmet cuisine" - again, name the place this is served.

"Sport is well represented in Cahir, which has a leisure centre (Duneske), an all-weather soccer pitch, and a GAA pitch."

Surely that could be simply be, "There is range of sports facilities available in the town including a leisure centre, an all-weather soccer pitch and a GAA pitch.".

"Cahir is twinned with the town of Scarborough in the United Kingdom and Ghana in Africa."

Where did people get this from? Cahir hosted the Ghanian team during the special olympics.

I would like if somebody that knows the town better than me re-wrote this article. The article was not like this before, and has been "enhanced" with very poor, opinionated information.

Improved edit

I've tweaked it a bit, and removed some of the superfluous advertising. I've also added to two photos.Seighean (talk) 19:55, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Much improved, hopefully people that live in Cahir will appreciate the effort that was put into making this article respectable. Trans5999 (talk) 22:39, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Photos edit

I posted two photos to this article, but as you can see, they're quite dark. They'll do for now. If anyone takes decent photos of the town in the future, you might consider uploading them and replacing my own. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Seighean (talkcontribs) 03:44, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

It isn't dark any more! Sarah777 (talk) 18:28, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
