I wrote some custom software (Linux-based) to digitally read out a CD. With a CDS200 "protected" CD, I seem to get deterministic read errors. So it seems that there's not only additional copy-protecting software on the CDs, but also willful errors are placed into the master... First Album

"White Lilies Island" by Natalie Imbruglia wasn't the first copy-protected CD in 2001. I can confirm that Avex trax is using this copy protection as well. Early CDs could still be ripped by standard media players, but later ones appear to be immune to ripping by conventional means. -- Question2

First Album

I thought it would be a good idea to mention which CD was the first to be sold with the copy prevention on it. I have found the website [1] which states that the first UK release to use any copy-prevention was "White Lilies Island" by Natalie Imbruglia (which is a fantastic album, by the way). What I want to know is, was this the first to use it in the worldwide sense? If anyone could confirm this please, or find the album that would the first ever to use it (not just in the UK), then I think it would be a good thing to include.

Apparently, the copy-protection meant that White Lilies Island suffered sales-wise, and due to numerous complaints, BMG replaced people's discs with later-released unprotected ones. Ortac 18:45, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

OK, after finding other sources, It seems that WLI was the first of its kind ever. Therefore I have added this to the 'Impact' section and have given a reference. I felt that it might have been a bit to much, but looking back I think it adds to the article significantly to have a bit of history, as well as the technical description. We need to merge the Macrovision CDS article into this one.

I just spent some time cleaning up the [[Macrovision CDS-200]] article, added mention of CDS-300, and then subsequently ran across this one. This one is much more comprehensive, and focuses on the technical side of what the software does, whereas the other article is briefer, and focuses on the controversy in the press. I'll see if I can get a merge started by moving the entirety of that article into a "controversy" section in this article, and then we can see where to go from there.
