WikiProject COVID-19

I've created WikiProject COVID-19 as a temporary or permanent WikiProject and invite editors to use this space for discussing ways to improve coverage of the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Please bring your ideas to the project/talk page. Stay safe, --Another Believer (Talk) 17:29, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Updating Frequency

Should we only update once a day with the NIH Daily Situation Report or should we keep updating throughout the day? What do you think? --Abbasi786786 03-18-2020 15:25 UTC

Either way, it'd be great if you're able to update throughout the day but for that authentic sources should be used. --اُردو (talk) 11:08, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Sindh Govt. has admitted a counting mistake, kindly revise the number. Dawn News has reported it here--119.160.119.58 (talk) 20:22, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Map

Let's discuss how map should be coloured, It seems some patients are admitted in the hospital of a city other than their native city? Should we colour his native district red too or just colour hospital district? --اُردو (talk) 07:40, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

The Map is wrong and includes part of India. Please correct it asap as otherwise, this page is part of Pakistani propaganda and should be reported to Wikipedia to ask for deletion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 106.51.28.151 (talk) 20:19, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Please change all words and statement that already added in order to make consistent spellings because this article is written in Pakistani English (colour, centre) from:

  • On 23 March, an isolation and quarantine center was completed at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical College in Karachi which also provided free tests of suspected cases with results in 8 hours of sample submission.
  • He further stated that sanctions on Iran should be lifted immediately so it could utilize its own resources to fight the ongoing outbreak there. In response, Maas assured him that the issues would be raised at the forthcoming G7 meeting and the European Union Foreign Ministers’ Conference next week.
  • The Punjab University manufactured coronavirus protection kits along with large amounts of hand sanitizers, disinfectants and antiseptic wet-tissues for the public. The sanitizers are for national usage. An online initiative was started for online purchases for home deliveries.

“Iran pushed Corona virus infected thousands (mostly Shia Zairins from Qom) into Pakistan”, said Prime Minister Imran Khan. Proposed merge of 2020 Tablighi Jamaat coronavirus hotspot in Pakistan into 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Pakistan

Such an article is inherently unnecessary as it will likely be a stub compared to the main article. The place in question is neither a province nor a district of the country which could possibly warrant a separate article. The number of confirmed cases stemming from this event are counted in the provincial tallies and not separately either. It would better serve as a section in the main article. Discuss. --Shawnqual (talk) 2:20, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

  • Oppose This is ongoing event passes WP:GNG and has both National and International coverage and hence do not want to rush to merge it .Through it is used for deletion more WP:RAPID is relevant here.Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 12:08, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
Pharaoh of the Wizards, WP:GNG could also be used for the situation which occurred in the Taftan border area. Huge numbers of pilgrims returned from Iran via this border to Pakistan and went to their respective provinces and districts, similarly spreading the virus into the communities.--Shawnqual (talk) 20:41, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Under the Sindh section, it is mentioned that:

"However, reports emerged that rations were being denied to the minority Hindus and Christians. They were told that the supplies were only meant for Muslims. Since the shops are shut due to the lockdown, the minority members state that they are out of food."

This content was added from Indian sources and there is not a single neutral third party source supporting such accusations.

So this content should be removed as Pakistani authorities have rejected these claims made by Indian media. Here is the source: https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/637723-no-evidence-supports-indian-news-agency-s-baseless-story-claiming-hindus-denied-rations-in-karachi ArifAliMuhammad (talk) 22:01, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

In my opinion, Indian sources should not be used for making such controversial edits especially when there is whole controversy related Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 going on in India and the Indian ruling party is repeatedly looking for justification to support their move. For example: https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/pakistan-bangladesh-non-muslim-population-citizenship-amendment-bill-bjp-1627678-2019-12-12 — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArifAliMuhammad (talkcontribs) 22:05, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
@ArifAliMuhammad:   Done. Yes, I noticed this was a controversial claim when it was added and not a single other source online supported the claim. It was also apparently added by an Indian user. Another user above has apparently provided a new source for the same story from Times of India, but this is again a highly political and impartial source. I have also searched all the leading, free news sources from Pakistan such as Dawn and The Express Tribune to look for the claim but to no result. I would henceforth recommend editors to add information only from reliable sources which are not motivated by politics. --Shawnqual (talk) 22:53, 01 April 2020 (UTC)
Kautilya3, Shawnqual has removed what you added so pains takingly, so please add it back!—Souniel Yadav (talk) 23:10, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Souniel Yaav. Since a Pakistani paper has explicitly investigated this news story and said that it is false, we have to wait until better sources become available. Shawnqual, ArifAliMuhammad, please note that you are required to follow WP:AGF as a matter of Wikipedia policy. Nor can you shoot down another country's news sources as unreliable based on your own speculations. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 00:57, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
Kautilya3, WP:AGF was precisely why the edit was left untouched for days. I understand there was a better way to handle this instead of deleting the edit, by stating that these were false reports and providing a reference; which is exactly what I have done now. -- Shawnqual (talk) 21:00, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Kautilya3, this is the latest and so I think it can be added now (if Jihadwatch cannot be used, the Business Standard and Times of India can be used as sources)!—Souniel Yadav (talk) 07:14, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
No, Jihad Watch is not a reliable source. Moreover, this is talking about Saylani Welfare Trust, which is a private charity, not part of the government. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 07:56, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

So now we know that The News International is a bullshitter [1]. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 12:42, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

On another note, I also called Saylani Welfare Trust in my country and asked if the reports were true. The volunteer said it was all "propaganda", and later sent me some pictures of some Hindus being given rations. I have donated money to them anyway, hoping that it would help if non-Muslims donated. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 13:40, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Following statement is not true ,

A Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation which took place in Lahore in early March 2020 became a coronavirus super-spreader across the country.

Because ,most of the patients were from zaireeen who came back from Iran and become the reason of spread of infection in pakistan, As stated in This article in refrence no 21, 36 and 22. It can also be justified that most of the patient were from taftaan border that could not be screened their properly as In refrence no 32 ,33 Hyderabad patient were also return from Iran , U can also check Sixth patient of corona in Pakistan were from Iran also mentioned in this article. Requesting attention

There is a discussion @ Talk:Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on religion#Impact of religion on the pandemic started by mfb

In that discussion the point raised by Kautilya3 religious congregations going ahead in many parts of the world (including Pakistan) & contributing to spread of COVID 19 does not seem to get due coverage and as The wub states is not only bizarre but also horrible & not responsible enough if wiki community fails to give wider & due attention. IMHO

The same point is applicable to article 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Pakistan#Religion. As of now the whole article does not mention problems in Pakistan vis a vis Religion but just a catholic church Cardinal's statement! Are we serious and responsible enough?

Bookku (talk) 01:10, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Some content with respect to Islam, as the country's dominant religion, would seem very welcome. However, we need reliable sources to inform content. Please suggest some. Bondegezou (talk) 13:13, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks @ Bondegezou for encouraging response, Although usually I work more on women issues, I suppose from tomorrow I shall reserve some time for these issues.

Thanks again & warm regards

Bookku and Bondegezou Yes, I am already on to this, compiling sources and information to expand the section. Have been busy for the past couple of days with other articles, but this section is next on my list. Also Bookku, the article does have a section with its corresponding article on how a religious event worsened the outbreak in the country. Feel free to contribute further with any reliable sources. --Shawnqual (talk) 00:07, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Yo. Pakistan government gave permission to congregational prayers during ramzan month. There are many sources out there, here is one. Would someone kindly add this in the article? Regards, —usernamekiran (talk) 01:29, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

@ Shawnqual I created a stub article 20-point precautionary measures consensus in Pakistan requesting your kind support in copy edit and updating of the article. I suppose if, Urdu Wikipedia does not have such an article then they too create one.
Thanks and regards Bookku (talk) 05:18, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Hey @ Bookku, wish you would have added this information here on the main article instead of creating a stub. It is unlikely to expand and also lacks scope and potential to be a relevant article; see WP:PAGEDECIDE and WP:REDUNDANTFORK, I am guessing it will soon be nominated for deletion. I will be editing it as needed, but I request that if there's any relevant information regarding Religion in the context of the pandemic in Pakistan, you add it here first and possibly open a discussion for creating new articles. Thanks. --Shawnqual (talk) 08:06, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your frank response, I have no issues which article I add criticism part of it, also no issues if WIkipedia community decides to merge the article, I started the same in good faith in utility point of view since I am not sure if we can include the list of 20 points as is in this article, it will unnecessarily increase length of this article. Other option is including dawn's page link in external links here still, we can not be sure of online news papers when they will archive their article.

Please do suggest

Replacing maps

Today I am replacing the maps that are currently in use on this article's infobox showcasing the numbers of COVID-19 cases, COVID-19 cases per million, and COVID-19 deaths, which can be found here, here, and here respectively, with my own maps, which are on the same topics, and can be found here, here, and here respectively. The three new files will supersede the files that are in use currently, and will be used.

This is because of the fact that the creator of the current maps, when he did create them, created them using either incorrect data (for that time period), which is still on display or an unclear legend on one of his maps (the cases per capita one), has, while being active on Wikipedia throughout this time, not updated any of the maps in the last fifteen days to account for any recent changes. The maps we will be using from now on will have none of the aforementioned problems. The original user did have some problems with my maps when I originally tried to use them on this article, which I will now address:

The map you are using is not to scale. It is also not consistent with the Mercator projection.

I do not understand how the map I am not using is not to scale in any way, or how the map I am using is not consistent to the Mercator projection. The map I am using is based on the Mercator projection, and it, anyway, shouldn't matter which projection is being used, as Wikipedia doesn't control the type of projection being used for maps on Wikipedia, and historically, Wikipedians have used all sorts of projections to convey information. If you'd like to know the source of my maps, you can check the maps listed on the websites of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics or the Survey of Pakistan, as my map was built directly off maps (Mercator maps chosen just for the original author) from those two sources using Gimp. In fact, it is the map that is being used currently that doesn't fit with the Mercator Projection, as it, like many other maps of Pakistan found on Wikipedia, is stretched 115% in the N/S direction.

The borders of the map lack detail.

I have halved the thickness of all of the borders to allow for more detail, but the borders of my map have as much detail as the size of the borders allow them to (10 px. for the national border and 5 px. subnationally). My map, however, is correct and seems far more accurate than the old map on many respects, such as the border of Northern AJK with Indian Kashmir, and the Punjabi exclaves in Sindh that the old map seems to omit. In fact, the map that was being used lacks a lot of detail, especially with Islamabad's area, and it's shameful how little detail is on that map given how small the borders are and the size of the resolution.

The legends and its colors have been set for a reason and you must not change them as you see fit.

That may have been true for my older maps, but my current map does not have these flaws. The legends and colors I am using currently have been pulled directly from Color Scheme E, which can be found here.

The files should not have time-stamps in them. The dates are to be instead stated in the infobox.

The timestamps have been removed from my maps.

You must never change the Author of the file and state yourself as one, even when you have uploaded a newer version of the file.

You must not change the summary of the file without consulting the original author.

I've restored the description, legend, and author of the original file and have created my own file. I was not aware of this policy.

You must not rush to update the files.

That is true. I'm now going to be updating the files every day whenever a subdivision moves into a new category and renders the previous map inaccurate at 12:00 A.M. PKT or 19:00 UTC.

I hope these resolve all of the issues, and if anybody has any specific problems with my maps, I'll be happy to accommodate their requests. --Abbasi786786 (talk) 23:30, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
