Talk:CKY (band)

Updates edit

I just went through and updated some of the information. The Australian tour happened a while back now, so no mention of it being "recent" was necessary. I combined the two small lines about touring and edited them to be more up-to-date.

The band has not confirmed nor hinted that the next album will be out in 2007, and as work on it has not yet started that timeframe is highly unlikely. I edited the part referring to the next album to better match the concrete information available.

CKY signed with Roadrunner Records http://www.ckyalliance.com/news/detail.cfm?newsID=362 and has stated there will be new music in 2007. 24.53.135.65 19:54, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Aw, man edit

Dude, you're giving people the wrong idea about CKY. Have you seen CKY live? I have, and there wasn't a stunt or a goddamn skateboard in sight. Will I set up a poll on the Alliance? I don't mind having a CKY template, but make a separate one for the band. Please.

It's not about CKY live and skateboarding, nor is it a content issue. If you're a big fan you're well aware of the relationship between the band, Bam and the CKY videos. You can go all the way to AskCKY if you like, doesn't change the validity of the template. Deizio talk 17:14, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ask CKY edit

Don't be afraid to include AskCKY pages as a cited reference, it's a great resource because it's written by the band. Much better than myspace or a forum. Deizio talk 17:12, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

My Edits 1/14/07 edit

Changed Matt's band assignment to simply "bass" as the band considers him their full-time bassist and he will be performing on the next album.

Labels fixed. CKY did not sign to Island records in 1999, they signed in 2001. CKY were signed to Volcom Entertainment from 1999-2001.

Removed "Past Members" as none of the members in question had ever contributed to the albums. Andy Smith was never a member of CKY, he was one of many bassists in Pre-CKY project "Foreign Objects".

Removed the info at the end of "Later Career" regarding the last Euro tour and the "small string of dates" in December. The European Tour was months ago, and the December shows have already occured. New year, no need for that info.

Removed link to www.campkillyourself.net. This is not an official website, it is a fansite, and it has not been updated in well over a year.

I put back the link to CKY's MySpace. I see that it was removed as per wiki's rules on linking to MySpace, but had Deiz bothered to read the exact rule, it states that MySpace linking should be avoided "Except for a link to a page that is the subject of the article or an official page of the article subject". MySpace.com/CKY is CKY's official, BAND RUN MySpace page, and is considered the secondary source of information by the band after CKYAlliance.com. CKY Guy 04:51, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well thanks. In addition to launching the CKY wikiproject, I'm also a member of the external links project and a contributor to the guideline, so let me point out a couple of things. a) It's a guideline, not a policy or "rule". b) there is constant flux on that page, particularly regarding myspace, youtube etc. so the version you're looking at right now cannot be considered gospel, and c) the CKY (band) page attracts all kinds of vandalism, misinformation and nonsense, so if on one of my many reversions, updates, repairs and fixes I dared to remove a myspace link then I guess you can shoot me. If you stick around a while, you'll get a better feel for the way policies and guidelines evolve, and about interacting with other editors. In the meantime, calm yourself down and join up at WP:CKY. Merged edit

Merged the OiL page into the CKY one. PaddyBoii 14:48, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Edits 3/5/07 edit

1. Andy Smith was NEVER a member of CKY, only pre-CKY projects. As this is a page about CKY, his listing as a "Past Member" is erroneous.

2. Ask CKY should be written as such, two words. This is how it is written throughout the rest of the article, but for whatever reason one instance of it continues to be reverted to "ASKCKY".

3. CKYForums.com is NOT an official CKY website, and therefore it should never take presedence over CKYAlliance.com or any of the official band member websites or MySpace page. I don't feel it has any place in the links section at ALL, being that they hardly ever discuss the band on those forums. If a forum must be placed in the links section, it should be the official CKY forums at CKYAlliance.com

For whatever reason these 3 edits were reverted although they were all valid edits.

Cleanup edit

I've pre-emptively cleaned up the article in the light of greater crackdowns on unsourced material. Please don't add / readd anything without sourcing it first. A few points:

  • It's inappropriate to link to a list of youtube hosted videos without specific evidence there are no copyright issues involved.
  • Quotes should be summarized and linked to unless citations from reliable independent sources prove their importance.
  • Articles should generally be written in a formal tone, watch out for phrases like "They were ready to record...", "..had become superstars in the skateboarding world...".
  • What does ""Guinnessburg" record mean? If they have a world record it requires citation.

Any other questions about this, just ask.. Deiz talk 09:18, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

"OIL" edit

ok i had a whole lot of info on the pre cky project, oil.but deiz deleted it thinking it is not neccesary. so im putting this topic up for dicussion so i can redo the whole oil project. it is a significant piece of cky history as the band oil is cky, the only difference is the change of name. all cky songs from volume 1 are oil songs except disengage the simulator which is foreign objects.

does everyone think i should make the page again with the info on all their releases?

thanks

  • Ryan, Wikipedia is not the place to write everything you know about your favourite "before they were famous" garage band. Either source your edits (WP:ATT) or they will continue to be reverted and you'll be blocked for disruption. As you may be aware, many of the articles you created were deleted and protected to prevent recreation. If you start creating articles using alternative titles to get around this you'll be blocked. Nobody is denying Oil existed, just that they were a largely unknown band, who later became famous as CKY. The Foreign Objects article is unsourced and doesn't really assert notability either. A quick mention of Oil in the CKY article is enough. As soon as sources that satisfy :ATT are provided, I'll help you write the article myself. Deiz talk 13:50, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well not only oil there was also the bullshit demo wasn't there? There isn't any information about that...

Genre edit

I fail to see how CKY can be considered "experimental" music. Ocatecir Talk 18:13, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • If you'll kindly check the band-run official CKY MySpace page, www.myspace.com/cky, you'll see that they classify themselves as "Rock/Experimental/Other". Even if you can't accept the "Experimental" tag, you can not possibly argue to me that they are not a Rock band. CKY is extremely far from being considered "metalcore", and even labelling them "Alternative Metal" is a stretch. I don't see your argument here. CKYGuy 18:28, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Cky.jpg edit

Image:Cky.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. live dvd/cd edit

should we add the new live dvd/cd to the discography section?

its not an official release, only because the band isnt allowed to release it through a label due to the copyright issues with island, so it has surfaced as a bootleg.

but it is the show they had planned for release on a live album. --Ry90 11:12, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vernon Zaborowski (touring bassist) edit

Vernon Zaborowski was not only a touring bassist but the bands actual bassist. Vern had bass lines that he had recorded in the album "Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild". The band only perceived Vernon as a touring bassist but you cant change the truth.

Are you implying that he recorded invisibly, or that he controlled Chad's mind while chad was recording the basslines? Vern may have had some minor degree of credit for writing on IDR, but he is not listed as having recorded anything. Seeing as you have no sources to prove he did, and the various AskCKY questions about it, as well as the liner notes of IDR stating he is the live bassist are sources otherwise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.161.124.131 (talk) 13:33, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

There are a few okay pictures of the band from gigs on Flickr, but you will need to ask members to change the restriction levels to ones that allow them to be used on the 'Pedia. Go to Upload file on the left, click Work from Flickr and look at the levels and ask uploaders to change. Andre666 (talk) 13:45, 2 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Genres edit

a few issues on the listed genres that I wanted to touch on:

1.) Post-Grunge -- reallly? Does anyone feel strongly about listing CKY as a post-grunge band? Bands like Matchbox Twenty or Creed are generally considered post-grunge bands, like the Wikipedia page mentions, and CKY is about the farthest thing from those bands. Let me know how you feel.

2.) Alternative Rock -- I'd like to remove this as well, since I don't see them fitting in with this genre. They are much better described as alternative metal, and that genre is already listed for them.

3.) Experimental Metal -- I'd like to add this genre. Experimental Rock is listed, but I think both genres accurately describe the band's sound.

Anyways, give me your opinions or objections if you have any... Tron55555 (talk) 14:17, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree that they are not post-grunge now, but their initial sound (Volume 1 and most of IDR) was influenced by this (and also it has a reliable source here). Alternative rock is an extremely broad term which encompasses a lot of genres and artists, including CKY. Experimental metal redirects to avant-garde metal, of which CKY is definitely not an example; experimental rock is much better. Andre666 (talk) 14:40, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
agreed on avant-garde metal as a no, hadn't seen it redirected to that, and agreed on alternative rock as a yes, as an umbrella genre at least, but as far as post-grunge, I still don't see any connection between CKY and bands like Lifehouse, Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin, Fuel, and Chevelle, or any of these bands really, especially in Volume 1. I checked out the AllMusic source, so I'll leave it be, but a mass music source like AllMusic attributing a certain style to the band, and the band actually having that style, are two very different things, and while there may be some post-grunge influence in their music, and I have trouble hearing even that, a band being influenced to some extent by a style and a band actually belonging to that genre are also two different things, so if anyone ever decides to remove that one I'll be the first to support it. Anyways, thanks for your consideration and taking the time to respond -- very much appreciated. Tron55555 (talk) 11:05, 8 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Two small typos edit

The last two sentences in the section "Departure of Matt Deis and future (2010–present)" read: "After spending much of 2011 to take a break due to turmoil within the band and to focus on other projects, CKY were announced to be playing the Soundwave Festival in Australia scheduled for early 2012. Only one show in the USA has been announced for the last half of 2011, with the band stating the is the last show within the Untied States for quite some time, fans are unsure if the band is still to continue after the scheduled 2012 dates."

"Untied States" should be changed to "United States" and "with the band stating the is the last show..." should be changed to "with the band stating that this is the last show..."

Thanks!

Daniel Davies as a former member edit

No, he was considered, but if they don't play a note live or in the studio - and now considering Deron is back that won't happen in the future, let alone in the former - Daniel Davies really has no place listed as a former member on the main CKY page or in the template box at the bottom of related pages. Ryan Bruni edit

The information pertaining to Ryan Bruni's departure from the band is factually inaccurate; He left the band to finish school. He WAS NOT fired. Deron Miller was given notice directly by Ryan. This must be corrected. In addition, the comments about Ryan Bruni made by Chad Ginsburg need to be removed. They are libelous.
