Historical Context

Could we maybe elaborate on the development of the Butler's role in the development of the "Great House"? Maybe a bit on how butlering was developed in different societies? —Preceding unsigned comment added by PopeUrban (talkcontribs) 21:03, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

A Majordomo is not always a Butler

I have a friend who is a modern day majordomo and whose responsibilities are more varied that a butler's. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.190.19.154 (talk) 04:53, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm in favor of keeping Majordomo as a separate article, although it could certainly be expanded quite a bit. 24.6.157.14 (talk) 02:24, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

'The Late' Princess of Wales

An edit was recently made to remove the words 'the late' from mention regarding the butler to Diana, Princess of Wales. Her being very clearly deceased, it is apparent that these words should be present. However, I confess an ignorance to appropriate protocol in this situation. Can anyone clarify? --Paul Anderson (talk) 22:09, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Since she wasn't THE Princess of Wales at the time of her death, it does sound a bit clangy to put "the late Diana, Princess of Wales" but without it, it sounds like she's still alive. 79.71.179.4 (talk) 18:38, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Artemis Fowl's Butler?

In the Artemis Fowl series by Irish author Eoin Colfer, the character Butler's ancestors are said to be where the name Butler first came into use as general servant. Should this info be put in, maybe added to the fiction section, or maybe even 'Unproved Theories' on how the word 'butler' was chosen? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.6.247.131 (talk) 13:32, 3 November 2008 (UTC) | Sorry, forgot to sign in. An Estate Manager is not a Butler

I disagree with the section that states a Butler is the same as an Estate Manager.

To the best of my knowledge, Estate managers are responsible for managing the grounds and agricultural land that makes up an extended estate (including shooting and fishing, farming, forestry and grounds maintenance), whereas a Butler is the head of the household staff, and the household adminstrator.

For example, the Royal Agricultural College does an MSc in Rural Estate Management, which covers very separate skills to any of the Butler training schools (can't find a link for any of these that aren't privately owned businesses, haven't done much editing, so I'm not sure if this counts as a questionable source or not and am therefore erring on the side of caution).

These are very separate area of expertise, both of which are highly skilled, and I think Estate Manager should be given seperate article, not redirected here.

Salary

"GBP 25 - 50 (USD 2,675 - 5,350) per-year salary"? What the heck exchange rate is that? Is it old to current, or just weird? Peridon (talk) 17:57, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
