Reason for closing edit

As a 1951 graduate, I would be interested in learning more about the decision to close the institution. Also a number of legendary Latin teachers (Mr. Devlin, Mr. McCabe), the chemist who taught German (Fr. Hufnagel), and the infamous Prefect of Discipline (Fr. Engel, ironically enough), and several other long-suffering faculty members might be mentioned.Jim Lacey (talk) 14:31, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unlike Fordham Preparatory School which is isolated from the Bronx on the campus of Fordham University and Regis High School, Xavier High School, and Loyola School (New York City) which are in mostly commercial parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn Prep was located on the fault line between an African-American, Caribbean immigrant, and a Hassidic Jewish community. I could see in 1971 that this was not a happy place and 20 years later, Carroll Street and Nostrand Avenue were the ground-zero of the Crown Heights Riot. I think in the 1960's the Jesuits recognized that the surrounding community could no longer support the school's mission, or that because of the decline in vocations, the number of Jesuit high schools in the metro area need to be culled, and Brooklyn Prep seemed to have the worst outlook. That's speculation on my part and not proper to be added to the article. patsw (talk) 22:56, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
The school was located on a "fault line" between blacks, immigrants, and jews? Do you mean to say that Jesuits are sexually attracted only to white boys? With all that has been going on lately, particularly in relation to alumnus Joe Paterno, I would not be surprised to discover that someone figured out something was going on with the Jesuits and the male students, and the school was quietly closed to prevent embarrassment. Speculation, of course, but pplausible, I think.97.124.9.7 (talk) 05:48, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Curtis Sliwa edit

Curtis Sliwa (founder of the Guardian Angels) attended but did not graduate from the school.

  • If you believe this needs to be deleted, let's discuss it. patsw (talk) 23:01, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • I have added links to the Alumni Award/Honorary Alumni Award page of the alumni Web site. It's verified that Robert S. Bennett and Curtis Sliwa attended Brooklyn Prep and have been given awards by the its alumni association in the past. patsw (talk) 21:47, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Curtis Sliwa and Ken Charles have been honored by the Brooklyn Prep Alumni Association and have articles in the Wikipedia. Deleting them from the article is not a legitimate content dispute. If you can persuade other Wikipedia editors to the contrary, I will be listening.
  • Basil Worgul who does not have an article in the Wikipedia had an obituary in the New York Times which does not mention his high school. A google search turned up no link between him and Brooklyn Prep. If there is a verifiable connection, he should be included in the article. patsw (talk) 00:51, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
