This usage of "Boot flags" seems highly specific to x86 disc boot partitions - which should be a subset of a more general article on the meaning(s) of Boot flags for computer system(s) startup. AbruptlyObscure (talk) 09:55, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
BIOS edit
The boot flag is something the BIOS uses, not DOS or Windows. I cannot find a good authority for that but there are articles indicating that. The original IBM PC could and all subsequent PCs can boot other operating systems, such as Unix, and would do so for whatever partition is marked as bootable. That would not have been possible if the boot flag was processed by DOS or Windows.
